Customer Mowed Too Low Themselves Then Blamed Service: DIY-Induced Decision Tree
Why this matters
When a customer mows their own lawn between scheduled treatments, drops the deck a notch, and scalps the high spots, the resulting yellow-brown patchwork is almost identical visually to summer fertilizer burn or drought stress. The callback comes in pinned to the most recent service. Recognizing the scalp signature versus a true service-induced fault preserves the route's reputation; misdiagnosing it ties the company to a recovery clock for a problem they did not cause.
Symptom presentation
Scalping shows as straw-colored to off-white patches concentrated on high spots: berms, the tops of subtle grade undulations, the edges of dropped sprinkler heads, and the lawn-meets-driveway edge where the mower deck rides over the curb. Surrounding low areas remain green. Looking down at the grass, the cut height in the bleached zones is dramatically shorter than the surrounding canopy and the blade tips look ragged or shredded rather than cleanly cut. On warm-season turf (especially bermudagrass cut low), scalping reveals the brown thatch and stems under the green canopy, presenting as a brown haze rather than tan patches.
Quick checks
Measure the cut height in the affected zone and in a healthy reference zone using a small ruler against the soil-to-blade-tip distance. Scalping is confirmed when the affected zone is two-thirds or less the height of the reference zone. Look at the blade ends: a clean angled cut is from a sharp mower; a frayed, white, longitudinally split end is from a dull blade or rotary mower running too low.
Look at the cut height the mower was set to. If the customer is willing to bring out the mower, photograph the deck setting and the front wheel adjustment. A mower set at 2 inches on a tall fescue lawn will scalp every grade undulation.
Ask the customer when they last mowed, what setting they used, whether they bagged or mulched, and whether they had been using their own mower or a contractor's. Many customers mow themselves between treatments and assume the technician knows.
Isolation tree
Step one: scalping pattern. Scalping concentrates on topographic high spots, sprinkler heads, and edge-of-pavement strips. Service-induced fertilizer burn follows the spreader path. Drought stress follows irrigation distribution. The geometric signature is usually enough to differentiate within a single inspection walk.
Step two: blade quality. A dull rotary mower tears blades rather than cutting cleanly. The torn edge dries, browns, and reads as bleached tips across the entire mowed area, with worse expression on the high spots. Dull-blade damage compounds scalping damage.
Step three: species and seasonal context. Cool-season turf in mid-summer cut short is a worst-case combination; the plant has limited photosynthetic surface to recover and the heat compounds the stress. Warm-season turf cut short in active growing season tolerates lower heights but takes weeks to recover canopy uniformity.
Step four: separate scalping from disease and from chemical injury. Disease at the same time of year produces ring patterns or smoky margins; chemical injury produces blade distortion or pattern that follows where product was applied. Pure scalp is geometric: ridges, edges, head tops.
Step five: confirm whether the customer's mower has the correct deck height for the species. Many big-box mowers ship at a default setting that is too low for cool-season turf. The customer may not realize the deck-height position numbers do not correspond to inches.
Confirming diagnosis
Diagnosis of customer-induced scalping is confirmed when (a) the pattern matches topographic high spots, (b) the measured cut height in affected zones is materially shorter than in reference zones, (c) the customer admits or the conversation reveals self-mowing between visits, and (d) ruled-out alternatives (no spreader pattern matching the service date, no disease pattern, no chemical signature).
Photograph the affected zone next to the reference zone with a ruler in frame; this is the most persuasive piece of evidence in the customer conversation. Walk the customer through the comparison at the curb. Most reasonable customers recognize the pattern when shown directly.
Remediation
For confirmed scalping with intact crowns: the lawn will recover with normal mowing at the corrected height and consistent moisture. Recovery time is 2 to 4 weeks for cool-season turf in moderate conditions, longer in peak summer heat. Withhold any service that pushes growth (high-nitrogen feeding) until the canopy has recovered uniformity. Raising the mowing height by one notch immediately allows the turf to shade the soil and reduces further heat stress.
For confirmed scalping with crown damage on high spots (less common, but possible on warm-season turf cut very low into stems): some bare spots may not recover and will need plug repair or sod patches at the customer's election.
Educate the customer on the species-appropriate mowing height and on the one-third rule: never remove more than one-third of the blade height in a single cut. Print a card with the species, the target height range, and the mowing frequency for the season; leave it at the door or the controller.
For customer-supplied mower issues (deck mis-set or dull blade): the company is not obligated to remediate at no charge. A goodwill biostimulant pass or a one-time discounted recovery service is reasonable for a long-tenured customer.
For the rare case where the customer disputes the diagnosis and refuses the evidence: document the inspection findings in writing, attach photos, and offer the corrective service at the standard rate. The work order documentation protects the company if the conversation escalates to a chargeback or a public review dispute.
