Indoor Air Quality Professional Certifications
Why this matters
A homeowner who Googles "indoor air quality assessment" near a major metro and finds three HVAC contractors will pick the one whose website cites named certifications by name. "Certified by the Indoor Air Quality Association" outranks "we do IAQ work" in both the customer's eye and the search engine's. IAQ certifications are also the only defensible credential when a customer's attorney asks during a mold-claim deposition why your technician was qualified to declare the home safe to re-occupy. Picking the right certification is a 5-year cost decision, not a 5-minute training decision.
The credential landscape
IAQ certifications fall into four families. Picking one without understanding which family you are in produces wasted training dollars.

A residential HVAC contractor wanting to upsell IAQ services usually needs Mechanical IAQ + Diagnostic IAQ. A restoration contractor needs Remediation. An energy-rater needs BPI or RESNET.

NCI Carbon Monoxide and Combustion Analyst (CO Certified)
- Issued by: National Comfort Institute
- Scope: combustion analysis on gas appliances, CO measurement and interpretation
- Time investment: 2-day class plus exam
- Cost: roughly a moderate for the class plus exam, equipment additional
- Renewal: 3-year cycle with continuing education
- Equipment required: Bacharach Insight Plus, Testo 320, or equivalent combustion analyzer (per the application)
- Best for: heating contractors who want to upsell combustion-analysis service calls and detect cracked heat exchangers definitively
NCI Residential Air Balancing (RAB)
- Issued by: National Comfort Institute
- Scope: airflow measurement, duct testing, room-by-room balance
- Time investment: 2-day class plus practical exam
- Cost: roughly a significant cost
- Renewal: 3-year cycle
- Equipment: TrueFlow grid or equivalent, manometer, balometer
- Best for: contractors who do retrofit or comfort-call work where "the back bedroom is always hot"
IAQA Certified Indoor Environmentalist (CIE)
- Issued by: Indoor Air Quality Association, certified by ACAC
- Scope: IAQ investigation, sample collection, report writing
- Time investment: self-study plus 200 documented field hours plus 4-hour proctored exam
- Cost: a moderate application fee plus a moderate exam plus study materials (around a moderate cost)
- Renewal: annual continuing education, 14 CEC per year
- Best for: contractors selling IAQ assessments to schools, commercial, or as a diagnostic differentiator
IAQA Certified Indoor Environmental Consultant (CIEC)
- Issued by: IAQA via ACAC
- Scope: complex IAQ investigation, multi-discipline coordination, expert testimony
- Time investment: must hold CIE plus 4 years documented experience
- Cost: a moderate application plus a moderate exam
- Renewal: annual CEC
- Best for: contractors who do litigation-support work or large commercial investigations
IICRC Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT)
- Issued by: IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification)
- Scope: mold remediation per IICRC S520, containment, PPE, post-remediation verification
- Time investment: 3-day class plus exam
- Cost: roughly a moderate for the class plus a modest exam
- Renewal: 4-year cycle, 14 CEC per cycle
- Required to claim "IICRC-certified mold remediation" in advertising
- Best for: restoration contractors and HVAC contractors who want to abate mold found during ductwork removal
IICRC Water Damage Restoration Technician (WRT)
- Issued by: IICRC
- Scope: water-damage drying per IICRC S500, moisture mapping, equipment selection
- Time investment: 3-day class plus exam
- Cost: roughly a moderate plus a modest exam
- Renewal: 4-year cycle
- Often required by insurance carriers for restoration referral lists
- Best for: contractors taking insurance water-loss work
BPI Building Analyst (BA-1)
- Issued by: Building Performance Institute
- Scope: whole-house energy and IAQ audit, blower-door test, combustion-safety test, ventilation assessment
- Time investment: 5-day class plus field exam plus written exam
- Cost: course tuition plus a meaningful additional outlay for required tools (blower door, combustion analyzer)
- Renewal: 3-year cycle, 30 CEC
- Required for most state energy-rebate programs and IRA 25C tax credit work
- Best for: contractors in markets with active energy-rebate programs (CA, NY, MA, MN, NJ)
RESNET HERS Rater
- Issued by: Residential Energy Services Network
- Scope: HERS index calculation, new-construction rating, EnergyStar verification
- Time investment: 7-day class plus 5 probationary ratings under a mentor
- Cost: roughly a significant all-in
- Renewal: annual quality-assurance audits plus CEC
- Required to deliver HERS ratings (mandatory in CA new construction, voluntary in others)
- Best for: new-construction HVAC contractors or energy-audit specialists
NADCA Air Systems Cleaning Specialist (ASCS)
- Issued by: National Air Duct Cleaners Association
- Scope: duct cleaning to NADCA ACR 2021 standard, sanitization protocols
- Time investment: 4-day class plus exam
- Cost: roughly a moderate cost
- Renewal: 3-year cycle
- Best for: contractors adding duct cleaning as a service line
CEU and renewal traps
Most IAQ certifications require continuing education credits to renew. The trap: CEUs from one body usually do not transfer to another. A CEU earned at an NCI training does not count toward IAQA CIE renewal. Plan CEU sources at the start of the year (Healthy Buildings Conference, NADCA Annual, IICRC Convention, ACI Home Performance Conference) to avoid scrambling in month 11.
