HVAC IAQ Add-On Services Reference

Why this reference exists

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) add-ons are the highest-margin upsells at HVAC service visits. Customer pays a meaningful ticket for an add-on that the tech installs in 30-90 minutes. Common opportunities: UV lights, advanced filtration, humidifier, dehumidifier, fresh-air ventilation, air cleaner. This reference is the working framework for selling + installing.

Why IAQ matters

Indoor air quality is 5-10x worse than outdoor:

  • VOCs (paint, cleaners, furniture, carpet off-gas)
  • Combustion products (gas appliances, fireplace)
  • Cooking ultrafines (NO2, PM2.5)
  • Biological (mold spores, dust mites, pet dander)
  • Outdoor pollution drawn in through ventilation
  • Radon (regional)

Customer symptoms: allergy flares, asthma, headaches, fatigue, dry skin, sore throats.

For HVAC tech: identify cause + recommend solution. Multiple solutions stack.

Standard add-on options

Whole-house humidifier

Bypass humidifier (most common):

  • Mounts to supply or return duct
  • Bypass air through wet evaporator pad
  • Adds moisture to dry winter air
  • The lower-cost humidifier option to install
  • 5-7 gallon/day capacity

Steam humidifier (premium):

  • Boils water; produces sterile steam
  • Mounts to duct
  • Higher capacity (8-15 gal/day)
  • Roughly double the bypass unit's install cost
  • Better humidity control + no risk of stagnant water

When to recommend: customer with very dry winter air, frequent static, dry skin/lips, wood floor cracking, sick from dry air.

Target indoor humidity: 35-50% (winter) / 40-55% (summer).

Whole-house dehumidifier (covered in separate reference)

  • The priciest IAQ add-on in this lineup to install
  • 70-130 pints/day
  • Customer with high indoor humidity (above 60%)

UV-C light

  • Mount in duct or evaporator coil
  • Kills mold + bacteria
  • 5,000-15,000 hour bulb life
  • A modest install cost plus a small annual bulb-replacement fee

When to recommend: musty smell, frequent allergies, asthma, mold-sensitive customer.

Air purifier / advanced filtration

HEPA filter (whole-house):

  • In bypass duct
  • True HEPA: 99.97% of 0.3-micron particles
  • The priciest filtration option here to install
  • Highest filtration; expensive to operate (high static)

MERV 13-16 in 4-5" media filter housing:

  • Lower cost, simpler
  • A fraction of the HEPA install cost to retrofit (housing) + media filters
  • Covered in MERV Reference

Electronic air cleaner (EAC):

  • Electrostatic plates
  • MERV 13-14 equivalent
  • Plates washable
  • Mid-range install cost, below HEPA

Active polarized media (PCO, PHI, bipolar):

  • Active disinfection + filtration
  • Comparable install cost to the EAC, wide range depending on product tier
  • Claims aggressive on pathogens (verify per product)

When to recommend: allergy customer, asthma, post-COVID awareness.

Fresh air ventilation (ERV/HRV - covered separately)

  • Among the pricier IAQ add-ons to install, comparable to a whole-house dehumidifier
  • Required in tight modern homes
  • IAQ + comfort

Whole-house air purifier (active)

  • iWave, REME HALO (controversial; verify claims)
  • A mid-tier install cost, below the ERV/HRV
  • Customer marketing-driven; claims vary

Sales conversation framework

Step 1: Listen at service call

Customer says:

  • "I keep getting sick"
  • "Allergies are killing me"
  • "The air is so dry"
  • "I smell something funny when AC runs"
  • "Dust is everywhere"

Step 2: Diagnose

Run air quality monitor (a basic retail unit or a pricier pro-grade model):

  • PM2.5 (particulates)
  • CO2 (ventilation)
  • VOCs
  • Humidity
  • Temperature

Numeric reading reveals specific issue + customer SEES the problem.

Step 3: Recommend specific solution

Problem Solution
High particulates Advanced filter (MERV 13 or HEPA)
Mold smell UV-C light + coil clean
High humidity Dehumidifier
Low humidity Humidifier
High CO2 ERV/HRV
High VOCs Carbon filter + ventilation
All of the above Combination IAQ package

Step 4: Quote

Single fix: a standalone add-on install.

Comprehensive IAQ package: several times the cost of a single fix (multiple add-ons bundled).

Step 5: Customer messaging

"Numbers show [X]. Recommendation [Y]. Total cost [Z]. Operating cost minimal."

Show the air quality monitor reading + the customer is convinced.

Common pitfalls

  • Selling without measurement: customer doesn't believe
  • Wrong solution for problem: HEPA for low-humidity = no improvement
  • No follow-up measurement: customer doesn't see results
  • Marketing claims that don't match data: customer disappointed
  • Improper install: filter housing leaking; UV light not exposed; humidifier dripping
  • No maintenance plan: filter clogs in 6 months; UV bulb dies in 12

Service contracts

IAQ adds drive recurring service:

  • Filter replacement: every 6-12 months (a low per-filter cost)
  • UV bulb replacement: annually (a modest fee)
  • Humidifier pad: annually
  • Annual IAQ checkup with monitor reading

Annual contract: a modest per-home fee. Easy add-on at sale.

When NOT to recommend

Some IAQ situations require different scope:

  • Severe mold problem: mold remediation specialist (IICRC AMRT certified)
  • Radon: radon mitigation specialist
  • Sewer gas: plumber
  • Wood smoke / fireplace: chimney sweep

Don't try to solve everything with HVAC add-ons.

Brand pitfalls

Some IAQ products have unproven or controversial claims:

  • Ionizer-style devices: claim to "polarize" air; mixed scientific evidence
  • Ozone generators: harmful; banned in occupied spaces
  • Some COVID-era products: marketing outran science

Stick to mainstream brands (Aprilaire, Honeywell Trion, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Bryant) with documented test data + lab-verified performance.

Customer education

Provide:

  • Why IAQ matters (5-10x indoor vs outdoor)
  • What each device does
  • Maintenance schedule
  • Annual service contract
  • Air quality monitor (leave one if buying multiple add-ons)

Educated customer stays + refers.

Customer talking points

For service call observation:

  1. "Numbers show [reading]. Above healthy threshold."
  2. "Caused by [identified problem]."
  3. "Solution: [device] + monthly maintenance"
  4. "Cost: $X install, $Y/year maintenance, $Z financing available"
  5. "Health benefit: clearer headaches, better sleep, less allergy"

For health-driven customer:

  1. "Customer with [condition]: studies show [improvement]"
  2. "Many doctors recommend IAQ improvements"
  3. "Insurance + HSA sometimes covers this scope"

The single most-effective IAQ upsell tool: a portable air quality monitor that you leave with the customer for 1-2 weeks. Customer sees the numbers in their daily routine - cooking, cleaning, fall asleep. The numerical evidence drives 60-80% close rate on add-on packages vs 15-25% on verbal-only pitch. The monitor pays back in 1-2 add-on sales.
