Heat Pump Refrigerant Charge Reference

Overview

Refrigerant charging by weight (per the data plate) only works on a brand-new install with all known line lengths. For service work, you charge by superheat (fixed-orifice systems) or subcooling (TXV / EEV systems). This reference is the field card every tech should carry - values are the manufacturer-typical ranges for split-system residential heat pumps. Verify against the specific equipment data plate before adjusting.

Outdoor ambient affects all readings - values above assume 75 - 95 °F outdoor, 75 - 80 °F indoor return air, 50 % RH. Outside that envelope, use the manufacturer's pressure-temperature chart on the equipment.

Installation

For a new install:

  1. Pressurize with dry nitrogen to manufacturer test pressure.
  2. Hold pressure 10 minutes; mark gauge position with a pencil to detect slow leaks.
  3. Pull vacuum to 500 microns and hold. If the reading rises above 1000 microns within 10 minutes, there's residual moisture or a leak.
  4. Release the factory charge and weigh in any additional charge for line set length per the data plate's per-foot allowance.
  5. Verify with superheat or subcooling per the metering device.

Operation

Run the system at least 15 minutes before reading gauges - the system needs time to stabilize. Temperatures within the first 5 minutes are not reliable for charging decisions.

Maintenance

Check superheat / subcooling at every annual service visit (see "Annual HVAC System Maintenance" SOP). Drift over the years is a leak signal even if pressures still look reasonable in cooling mode.

Troubleshooting

  • High superheat, low subcooling: undercharged. Add refrigerant in 4-oz increments and re-read after 5 minutes.
  • Low superheat, high subcooling: overcharged. Recover refrigerant in 4-oz increments.
  • Both high: restricted metering device or partial blockage in the liquid line. Don't add refrigerant - fix the restriction first.
  • Both low at design conditions: faulty TXV / EEV not adjusting properly. Verify bulb attachment and superheat at the bulb.

EPA Section 608 certification is required to recover, install, or top off refrigerant. Releasing refrigerant to atmosphere - even unintentionally via a leaky service connection - is a federal violation. Use a certified recovery machine on every removal.
