Heat Pump Aux Runs Above Balance Point: Decision Tree

Why this matters

Heat pump aux heat that energizes at 45 F outdoor on a system whose balance point should be 28 F is the most expensive operating defect in the heating season. Each hour of unnecessary strip-heat runtime on a 10 kW kit at 230 V is a 10 kWh delivery the heat pump could have made at 2 to 3 kWh. Customers see it on the bill. The cause is almost never the heat pump itself - it is the control strategy, the thermostat configuration, or a stuck demand input. Four families of fault produce identical behavior and the right fix preserves equipment warranty and customer trust. Use this tree to identify which.

Symptom presentation

Customer reports the electric bill is high and the auxiliary heat indicator on the thermostat illuminates at outdoor temperatures of 40 to 50 F. The heat pump is a recent-vintage variable or two-stage system. The thermostat is a smart or communicating model. Strip-heat amp clamp shows the resistance bank energizing at outdoor temperatures well above the intended balance point. Indoor temperature satisfies normally.

Variants:

  • Aux energizes only on a deep setback recovery (5 F-plus call): smart-recovery logic, not a fault.
  • Aux energizes any time the thermostat calls for heat: thermostat misconfigured as conventional, not heat-pump.
  • Aux runs continuously regardless of stage call: stuck relay or shorted W2 wire.
  • Aux runs at outdoor 35 F-plus during defrost only: normal, expected, not a fault.
  • Aux runs above balance point and customer added a smart thermostat last month: configuration drift.

Quick checks before opening the air handler

Capture the thermostat brand, model, configuration (heat pump vs conventional), staging type, and balance-point or lockout settings. On a communicating system, log into the installer menu and read the current operating mode, demand stage, and aux call duration over the last 24 hours.

Read the outdoor temperature when aux is called, the indoor setpoint, the current indoor temperature, and the call duration. Aux that engages 5 minutes into a call with indoor temperature 3 F-plus below setpoint and outdoor at 35 F-plus is smart-recovery or staging logic - not a fault. Aux that engages at minute 1 of a call regardless of stage is a wiring or configuration issue.

Confirm balance point. For a 3-ton heat pump with 28,000 Btu/hr nameplate heating capacity at 47 F and 19,000 Btu/hr at 17 F, the design heating load and the equipment capacity curve cross at the balance point. For a typical 2,500 sq ft house in IECC zone 4, balance point is usually 25 to 30 F. Above that, the heat pump alone meets the load. Aux should not energize.

Isolation tree

Branch 1: thermostat configuration.

  • Thermostat configured as "conventional" instead of "heat pump" - the system reads W as primary heat (which is strip), Y as cooling only. Reconfigure as heat pump (O or B reversing valve sense, Y compressor, W2 emergency).
  • Heat-pump-mode thermostat with no balance-point or lockout setting - aux engages on any cycle delta exceeding the differential. Set outdoor lockout for aux to 35 F (default) or balance-point plus 5 F.
  • Smart thermostat with "comfort first" or "fast recovery" mode enabled - aux engages to hit setpoint quickly. Disable or change to economy/eco mode.
  • Communicating thermostat upgraded but installer dipswitches on the air handler still set for legacy aux logic - re-commission per OEM.

Branch 2: setback strategy.

  • Customer is using a deep setback (65 F overnight, 72 F morning) - on recovery, the thermostat sees a 7 F gap, calls aux. Reduce setback to 3 F or remove. Educate the customer that heat-pump setbacks save less than gas-furnace setbacks because of the aux penalty.
  • Adaptive recovery enabled with default aggressive curve - reduce to conservative or disable.

Branch 3: wiring and relay.

  • W2 (aux) wire shorted to W1, Y, or 24 VAC - aux energizes any time the system has any call. Disconnect at the air handler, ring out, repair.
  • Auxiliary heat relay (sequencer) stuck closed - aux runs continuously regardless of demand. Replace.
  • Defrost board stuck in defrost - aux runs on every cycle because the system thinks it is defrosting. Check defrost LED, reset, replace board if hung.
  • Outdoor temperature sensor failed open or shorted - thermostat reads 0 F, energizes aux at every call. Replace sensor (typical 10K NTC, OEM specific).

Branch 4: heat pump capacity shortfall.

  • Heat pump nameplate capacity at the call ambient is less than the building heat loss - aux is actually needed. Run Manual J and confirm. If aux is required at 40 F-plus, the heat pump is undersized for the load or the envelope has degraded.
  • Heat pump charge is low or compressor is failing - capacity at 47 F is well below nameplate. Run a delivered-Btu check (indoor temperature rise times CFM times 1.08) and compare to nameplate.

Branch 5: defrost.

  • Aux runs only during the defrost cycle and indoor air temperature stays warm - normal, expected per AHRI 210/240 and OEM design.
  • Defrost cycles last over 10 minutes or occur more than once per hour at 30 to 40 F ambient - defrost board demand failure or sensor failure. Separate diagnostic.

Confirming the diagnosis

After remediation, log thermostat call data over 48 hours of heating-load conditions covering the suspected fault range (outdoor 30 to 50 F). Aux runtime should be limited to defrost cycles and setback recovery events that exceed normal differential. Total aux kWh should fall by 60 to 90 percent compared to baseline if the diagnosis was configuration or staging. Pull thermostat history report and document baseline and post-fix kWh.

Disabling aux entirely on a heat pump is unsafe in cold climates and may violate IECC and OEM emergency-heat provisions. Configure aux to engage only when needed (lockout at balance point plus 5 F) and verify defrost is unaffected.
