Filter MERV Rating Guide

Overview

MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) rates how effectively a filter captures airborne particles. Higher MERV = finer filtration BUT higher static pressure drop = harder workload on the blower. Picking the right filter for a specific system requires balancing the customer's IAQ goals against what their equipment was designed to push air through. This is the cheat sheet for that conversation.

Pressure drop typically doubles per +3 MERV rating jump at the same airflow. A system designed for MERV 8 with the customer "upgrading" to MERV 13 often hits the blower's static pressure limit and reduces airflow below cooling design - which then freezes the evaporator on a hot day.

Notes

  • Don't recommend MERV 13+ without measuring the system's static pressure budget. A residential furnace blower designed for 0.5" w.c. total external static may be at 0.4" already on a MERV 8 filter. Upgrading to MERV 13 pushes it over and the system can't move enough air.
  • Filter THICKNESS matters more than MERV alone. A 4" MERV 13 has lower pressure drop than a 1" MERV 13 because there's more surface area for the same volume. Customers asking for MERV 13 should upgrade the filter housing if their current rack is 1" only.
  • Replace 1" filters every 30 - 60 days; 4 - 5" filters every 6 - 12 months. This is the manufacturer's recommendation; pet households need to halve those intervals.
  • HEPA in residential: standard whole-house filters don't reach HEPA. If a customer genuinely needs HEPA (severe allergies, immunocompromised), the answer is a SEPARATE HEPA bypass unit, not a higher-MERV main filter.
  • Electronic air cleaners: claim performance equivalent to high-MERV media. Effective when maintained (monthly cell wash); become air-resistance-only when neglected. Sell maintenance with the unit or don't install.

Safety

A customer who installs a higher-MERV filter without your knowledge can starve their system of airflow, freeze the coil, and call you for a "no cool" service. Always check the filter as step 1 of any cooling-side diagnostic - it explains 25 % of summer no-cool tickets.
