HVAC Efficiency Ratings Reference (SEER / AFUE / HSPF)

Overview

Efficiency ratings drive equipment selection, federal tax credits, and customer quote conversations. Mis-quoting a rating undersells the equipment OR oversells what the customer's existing system needs. This reference is the field card for the three ratings techs encounter daily in residential HVAC.

A SEER 16 system uses ~25 % less energy than a 13 SEER system for the same cooling. SEER2 is the post-2023 testing standard; older equipment is rated in SEER (~13 % stricter than SEER2; not directly comparable).

Specifications

Federal tax credit eligibility (current programs, verify current year):

  • Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) credits for heat pumps: SEER2 ≥ 16 (split system) or ≥ 15 (packaged); HSPF2 ≥ 9.5 (split system) or ≥ 8.1 (packaged)
  • Furnaces: AFUE ≥ 97 % gas, ≥ 95 % oil
  • Programs change yearly: verify current eligibility before quoting credits as part of the deal

Performance

What rating differences mean in real customer dollars (typical residential):

Notes

  • Higher SEER systems use variable-speed compressors. These are more efficient but also more complex + more expensive to repair when they fail. Don't quote a 20 SEER system in a market with limited variable-speed service expertise.
  • Heat pumps below 10 °F: older heat pumps lost capacity sharply below freezing. Modern cold-climate heat pumps (Mitsubishi Hyper-Heat, Daikin Aurora, etc.) maintain 100 % capacity to 5 °F and operate down to -13 °F.
  • SEER ratings on packaged units are lower than on split systems for the same cooling. Don't compare apples-to-oranges.

The single most-confused customer conversation is "I want the highest SEER you sell." Quote it, but ALSO quote the mid-tier with the payback math. Most customers pick the mid-tier once they see that the SEER 18 vs SEER 22 cost difference takes 8+ years to break even at their utility rate. The high-SEER quote becomes the "anchor" that makes the mid-tier feel reasonable - that's healthy selling, not bait-and-switch.
