Condensate Pump Runs Constantly With a Dry Pan: Decision Tree

Why this matters

A condensate pump that cycles or runs continuously while its reservoir and the drain pan are dry is failing in a way that burns out the motor and floods the area when it finally seizes. The pump is responding to a float that thinks water is present, or it is moving the same water in a loop because the discharge cannot clear, or the float is mechanically stuck up. Each of those is a different fix, and a tech who only replaces the pump may reinstall the same plumbing fault and get a callback. The dry-pan-but-running symptom is the key: real condensate is not the driver, so the failure is in the float, the discharge check, or the reservoir, not the coil. This tree isolates a stuck float from a failed check valve from a siphoning discharge before you swap hardware.

Symptom presentation

The clean version: the small condensate pump hums and runs (continuously or in rapid short bursts) while the reservoir is empty or nearly so and the air handler drain pan is dry. Sometimes a trickle of water keeps returning to the reservoir between bursts. The customer reports a constant motor hum from the closet or attic.

Variants that change the tree:

  • Pump cycles every few seconds with water visibly dropping back into the reservoir: failed discharge check valve.
  • Pump runs continuously, reservoir dry, float visibly stuck up: mechanical float jam.
  • Pump runs and reservoir slowly fills despite no cooling: backflow from the building drain into the discharge.
  • Pump dead, reservoir full, safety switch tripped the system off: opposite failure, a different tree.

Quick checks before replacing the pump

Open the reservoir lid and find the float. Lift and drop it by hand with power off; it should move freely and the switch should click. A float fouled by biofilm, mineral scale, or a tipped reservoir that holds the float up sends a permanent run command. Clean or free the float and re-test before condemning the motor.

Watch the discharge while the pump runs. If water rises in the tube and then falls back into the reservoir each time the pump stops, the discharge check valve is missing or failed, so the pump empties the reservoir, the lifted water returns, the float re-rises, and the pump re-runs in a loop. This is the most common cause of constant short-cycling with a dry-then-refilling reservoir.

Branch 1: discharge check valve.

  • Lifted water draining back: install or replace the inline check valve at the pump outlet, oriented for flow away from the pump. Verify the discharge has a proper vertical lift within the pump's rated head and that the tubing is not kinked.
  • No anti-siphon loop on a long horizontal run that lets the lifted column drain back even with a check: add the manufacturer's recommended vent or loop.

Branch 2: float mechanically stuck or fouled.

  • Float jammed up by scale or debris: clean the reservoir, free the float, add a condensate tablet schedule. Re-verify free travel and switch click.
  • Reservoir not level so the float hangs against the wall: re-level and secure the pump.
  • Magnetic or reed float switch failed closed: meter the switch; replace the switch or float assembly if it does not open with the float down.

Branch 3: water actually returning from outside.

  • Discharge tied into a building drain without an air gap, and the drain backs up into the pump: the float keeps cycling on returning water. Provide an air gap or re-route the discharge per code; never hard-tie a condensate discharge to a sewer without an air gap.

Branch 4: control wiring fault.

  • A pump wired so it runs whenever the air handler is energized (rather than on its own float) appears to run constantly. Confirm the pump is on its own float circuit and the safety overflow switch is wired into the equipment control, not the pump run circuit.

Confirming the diagnosis

After the fix, pour a measured amount of water into the reservoir and watch one full pump cycle: the pump should energize at the high float, lift the water, the check valve should hold, the reservoir should empty, and the pump should stop and stay off with the float down. No re-fill, no re-run. Run an actual cooling cycle on a humid day and confirm the pump cycles only as real condensate arrives. Verify the overflow safety switch trips the equipment if the reservoir is artificially filled. Log float operation, check-valve presence, discharge head, and the safety-switch test.

A condensate pump discharge must terminate with an air gap, never a direct connection to a sanitary drain. A failed check plus a hard sewer connection can siphon sewer gas or contaminated water back into the conditioned-air drain pan. Verify the air gap on every service.
