Wood vs Vinyl vs Aluminum vs Chainlink Decision Matrix
Why this matters
Material selection on a residential fence is rarely about looks alone. Soil chemistry, frost cycle, HOA covenants, livestock or dog containment, pool-code geometry, neighbor relations, and the homeowner's tolerance for stain-every-three-years maintenance all push the right answer in different directions. A senior estimator who defaults to "what was on the last quote" loses on jobs where the site says vinyl and the customer would have paid for aluminum. This matrix walks the four field variables that drive the decision - exposure, function, HOA/code, and life-cycle budget - and the ASTM/ICC standards that apply once the choice is made.
Symptom presentation - what the homeowner is asking for
You arrive at one of four briefs. First, "we just want privacy from the new neighbor" - the easy case, but with a privacy/maintenance trade. Second, "we have a pool and need code" - non-negotiable geometry per IRC AG105 plus state pool-fence statute. Third, "we have a dog" - containment height, no-climb pattern, and dig-defeat detail. Fourth, "we want it to look like the rest of the neighborhood" - HOA-driven and material is sometimes specified down to the manufacturer.
Quick checks at the site walk
- Confirm property lines. Pull the survey or stake the line with a long tape. A fence misplaced by 18 inches is a tear-down and a lawsuit. Most disputes start when the estimator skipped this step.
- Pull HOA covenants. Some HOAs prohibit chain-link entirely, some require shadow-box wood with capped 6x6 posts, some specify a single approved vinyl color. Quoting the wrong material to an HOA-restricted property burns the install schedule.
- Identify the pool fence requirement. If there is a pool inside the proposed fenced area, IRC AG105 (or state equivalent - California Health and Safety Code 115921 to 115929, Arizona Revised Statutes 36-1681) applies. Minimum 48 inches height, no climbable features 1.75 inches and up, max 4 inch sphere gap, self-closing self-latching gate. Excludes chainlink with mesh openings over 1.75 inches.
- Measure exposure. Salt-spray within 1 mile of saltwater coast (ASTM B117 territory) eliminates standard galvanized chainlink and standard powder-coat aluminum without a marine-grade spec.
- Identify frost line and soil. Discussed in detail in the frost-line decision article; affects post-set choice not material directly but does affect total install cost which feeds back to material choice.
Isolation matrix - which material on which axis
Wood (cedar, PT pine, redwood). Wins on: privacy fence under 8 ft with traditional residential aesthetic, neighborhoods where wood is the norm and replacement-in-kind is required by HOA, customers who plan to stain or repaint regularly. Loses on: termite-active regions if untreated species, salt-spray coastal zones, HOA neighborhoods that have moved to vinyl, and customers who say "I will never re-stain it." Lifecycle: untreated cedar 12 to 20 years to replacement; PT pine 15 to 25 years; redwood 20 to 30 years (and increasingly cost-prohibitive). Mandatory: PT lumber for any ground-contact post per AWPA U1 UC4A.
Vinyl (PVC profile in T&G or shadowbox pattern). Wins on: privacy under 8 ft, HOA that has standardized on vinyl, customers who want no-maintenance, pool-fence applications where the panel is rated for the 4-inch sphere and meets ASTM F964 (vinyl fence standard). Loses on: shaded north-facing runs where mildew accumulates and shows worse than wood, soccer-ball-impact areas (vinyl cracks at low temp impact below 25 F), and customers who plan to attach lights, hooks, or trellises. Lifecycle: 25 to 30 years to brittleness/UV failure. Color through-extruded (not surface coated) is the spec to ask for.
Aluminum (powder-coated welded picket). Wins on: pool fence applications, ornamental front-yard fence where see-through is desired, coastal exposure where steel rusts, slopes where the rail must rack panel-by-panel. Loses on: privacy applications (open picket, not a privacy product unless paired with a screen). Lifecycle: 30 to 50 years with maintained powder coat; marine-grade (Class 1 anodize plus powder per AAMA 2604 or 2605) extends to 50+ years coastal. Standards: ASTM F2408 ornamental fence specification.
Chainlink (galvanized steel mesh on steel posts). Wins on: large perimeter runs over 200 ft where cost-per-foot matters, dog-containment with vinyl-coated mesh for visibility, industrial perimeter, athletic backstops. Loses on: residential HOA restrictions, pool-code (1.75 inch mesh is not pool-compliant), and any homeowner who explicitly does not want chainlink. Lifecycle: 20 to 40 years for galvanized; PVC-coated mesh extends rust resistance to 30+ years. Standard: ASTM F668 (vinyl-coated chainlink), ASTM F567 (installation), ASTM A392 (zinc-coated steel chain link fabric).
Confirming diagnosis - sample on site
Bring sample panels to the in-home estimate. Wood: a 24-inch piece each of cedar and PT pine. Vinyl: a corner section showing extrusion color depth (scratch it to show the customer that the color goes through). Aluminum: a 12-inch picket with the proposed powder finish. Chainlink: galvanized vs PVC-coated mesh side by side.
For HOA-controlled jobs, take the proposed material to the HOA architectural review committee BEFORE quoting installation. A rejected material kills the install.
Remediation - when the wrong material is already in
Failed wood (rot, termite, warp): cheap fix is plank-by-plank replacement up to 30 percent of pickets. Beyond that, post failure is the next likely cause and a full fence replacement starts to dominate. Failed vinyl (UV chalk or impact crack): individual panel replacement available from any extruder with matching profile; color match on aged white vinyl is unreliable. Failed aluminum (powder coat failure): can be sanded and recoated with field-applied epoxy, but factory powder is the long answer; salvageable panels can be refinished by a powder-coat shop. Failed chainlink (rust): regalvanize is uneconomic; replace mesh while reusing posts and rails if posts are sound.
