Why this matters

Vinyl fence is the fastest-growing residential fence material because of low maintenance (no painting / staining) and consistent appearance. Installation differs from wood (panel-based vs picket-by-picket); a contractor familiar with wood install may struggle with vinyl until learning the techniques.

Procedure

Step 1: Layout

• Mark fence line
• Identify post locations (panel widths typically 6 ft, 8 ft, or per manufacturer)
• Account for corners, ends, gates

Step 2: Set posts

For each post:

• Dig hole (depth per local frost / 1/3 rule)
• Insert metal-cored vinyl post
• Brace
• Add concrete; allow to cure

Some vinyl post systems use:

• Concrete around the post
• Concrete inside the post (some installations)
• Verify per manufacturer

Step 3: Verify post spacing

• Post-to-post distance must match panel width
• Verify after concrete sets
• Adjust if needed (re-set posts is significant work)

Step 4: Install panels

After concrete cures:

• Slide panel rails into posts (most manufacturers; vinyl posts have rail slots)
• Some installations use bolts at the slot
• Continue panel by panel

Step 5: Install gate

• Gate posts heavier or reinforced
• Gate hardware per manufacturer
• Self-closing if pool gate

Step 6: Add caps

• Post caps on each post
• Slide on; some require glue
• Final aesthetic

Most vinyl posts have slots routed for the rails:

Slope handling
