Stain or Paint Peels Only on Sun-Facing Fence Boards: Single-Observable Diagnosis
Why this matters
A customer calls back and says the finish is peeling on one side of the fence while the other side looks fine. Same fence, same application, different result by orientation. The single observable - peeling only on the sun-facing side - is specific enough to narrow the cause to three candidates before you set foot on the property. Getting the diagnosis right on the first visit matters because the correction differs for each cause: one is a maintenance conversation, one is an application defect, and one is a moisture issue that requires different prep to fix correctly.
The three candidates
Candidate 1: End-of-life UV degradation, sun side first. Finishes have a maintenance life. The UV-stabilizer package in the binder depletes over time, and the side facing south or west receives meaningfully more cumulative UV than the north or east face. When the finish reaches end of maintenance life, the sun-facing side fails first by 6 to 18 months. The north side looks fine because it has not yet crossed the threshold. This is not a defect - it is a maintenance schedule issue.
Candidate 2: Application in direct sun. Solvent-based stains and some water-based paints require a surface temperature below a threshold (typically 90 F surface temp) to penetrate rather than film. When applied in direct afternoon sun, the solvent flashes off before the finish soaks into the wood fiber. The result is a surface film bond instead of a penetrating bond. Film bonds peel under UV expansion and contraction cycling, especially on the side that receives the most thermal swing. The shaded boards were applied in cooler conditions and bonded correctly. This is an application defect.
Candidate 3: Moisture content asymmetry at time of application. If the fence was wet from rain or dew when application began, the sun-facing side dried faster and may have appeared ready while the shaded side was still wet. However, the failure mode can also run in reverse: the sun-facing side dried to the surface but retained subsurface moisture that expanded during first-summer heating and broke the bond from below. This cause requires moisture meter confirmation to distinguish from Candidate 2.
Diagnostic steps
Step 1: Pull finish age records. How old is the finish and what was the maintenance interval recommendation for that product type? If the finish is at or past expected life and the north side still looks borderline, Candidate 1 is confirmed. No further investigation needed; this is a maintenance conversation.
Step 2: Pull application weather records. Check the job date and pull weather records for that day (weather.gov historical data by zip code is sufficient). Was the application done between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in direct sun on the south face? Was the air temperature above 85 F? These are consistent with Candidate 2.
Step 3: Check both sides with a moisture meter. Meter the wood on both the peeling face and the intact face on the same board, in comparable locations (mid-board, not at an end). If the peeling side is reading higher moisture than the intact side now, that is consistent with Candidate 3. If both sides read the same, moisture differential is not the driver.
Step 4: Inspect the peel character. A film-bond peel (Candidate 2) tends to lift in sheets with the back face of the lifted film showing little wood fiber. A finish that bonded correctly but was overstressed (Candidate 1) tends to crack, alligator, and then lift in smaller chips. A moisture-driven peel (Candidate 3) often shows cupping or raised grain under the lifted finish.
Correction by candidate
Candidate 1 (end of life): sand the peeling areas to remove all loose finish - do not apply over a failed film. Allow the wood to reach equilibrium moisture (under 15 percent on the meter, ideally under 12 percent). Apply a UV-stabilized penetrating stain formulated for south or west exposures. Set a maintenance schedule reminder with the customer for 2 to 3 years rather than the standard 4 to 5 years on the sun face.
Candidate 2 (application defect): the correct repair is full strip of the sun-facing boards back to bare wood, followed by re-application under correct conditions: surface temperature below 85 F, no direct sun on the application surface during work, air temperature between 50 F and 80 F. Early morning application on the south face is the standard workaround when summer timing is unavoidable.
Candidate 3 (moisture under finish at application): same mechanical process as Candidate 2 - strip and re-prep. The additional step is allowing the boards to fully dry after stripping, confirmed by meter reading under 15 percent, before re-coating. Do not re-coat in high-humidity conditions.
Documentation
Record the diagnosis candidate, the evidence used to confirm it, the application conditions at correction time (air temp, surface temp, humidity, time of day, cloud cover), and the moisture meter readings before and after drying. This documentation supports any warranty conversation and protects the contractor if the customer disputes the cause.
