Split-Rail Fence Rails Sag Only at the Longest Spans: Single-Observable Diagnosis
Why this matters
A split-rail fence that sags midspan on longer runs while shorter runs stay straight is a specific pattern that points to one of three mechanical causes. Diagnosing the right one before ordering replacement rails prevents a callback after the wrong fix. Sag that is left unaddressed worsens under snow load and accelerates mortise wear at both ends of the affected rail.
What you are seeing
Rails bow visibly downward at the center of the longest spans. Shorter spans in the same fence line - typically 8-foot sections - remain straight or show only minor deflection. The sag is consistent along the span, not localized to one end.
Decision tree
Step 1 - Measure the span
Measure the center-to-center distance between posts on the sagging runs. Compare to the spans that are holding.
- If the sagging spans are longer than 9 feet and the rails are standard diameter (3-4 inch top, 2-3 inch bottom for a two-rail fence), the span likely exceeds the design capacity of that rail size. Go to Cause A.
- If the spans are identical to non-sagging runs, the span is not the root cause. Go to Step 2.
Step 2 - Check rail moisture and age
Inspect the rail surface and ends.
- If the rails were installed within the last 6-18 months and show checking (surface cracks along the grain), the wood is still drying. Fresh-cut or partially dried cedar or locust rails can be within tolerance when installed wet, then lose stiffness as they dry and shrink. Go to Cause B.
- If the rails are dry and seasoned (no active checking, no green tint, ends fully gray), moisture content is not the current driver. Go to Step 3.
Step 3 - Inspect the mortise fit
Stand at the post and look at where the rail end seats into the mortise hole.
- Push the rail upward at midspan. If it lifts easily and the rail end drops back into the pocket with visible play, the mortise is oversized or has worn loose. Go to Cause C.
- If the rail end is snug in the mortise with no vertical play, the post connection is not the primary cause. Revisit Step 1 with a more precise span measurement - a 6-inch difference can matter at these rail diameters.
Cause A - Span exceeds rail capacity
Standard split-rail cedar and locust rails are typically sized for 8-foot spans. Extending to 10 or 11 feet with the same rail diameter increases midspan deflection by the cube of the span ratio. At 10 feet with a 3-inch bottom rail, dead-load sag plus a modest snow or ice load can permanently set the wood.
Fix: Add an intermediate post at the midpoint of the oversized span to bring each half to an acceptable length. This requires digging a new post hole at the center, setting a matching post to the correct height, and cutting two replacement half-length rails to fit. The existing sagged rail cannot be reversed once wood fibers have permanently set.
Prevention note: When a customer requests a span longer than 9 feet, discuss adding a center post at the design stage. The labor and material cost is lower than a callback replacement.
Cause B - Rails installed with high moisture content
Freshly milled or green-harvested cedar and locust can have moisture content above 25 percent. At installation the rail is stiff enough to pass a manual flex test but the mortise is cut to fit the wet diameter. As the rail dries over the first 12-18 months, two things happen: the rail diameter shrinks (loosening the mortise fit) and the rail stiffness drops as the wood dries unevenly, sometimes with internal tension that allows gradual creep under gravity.
Fix: If the sag is moderate (less than 1.5 inches at midspan) and the rails are still drying, monitor for one additional season before replacing. If the rails are fully dried and still sagging, the wood has taken a permanent set and replacement is required. Replace with kiln-dried or properly air-dried stock. Verify moisture content with a pin meter before install - target below 19 percent for fence rails in most climates.
Prevention note: Specify air-dried or kiln-dried rails in your material orders. Wet-green rails are cheaper but generate disproportionate callbacks.
Cause C - Mortise too loose at the post
The mortise is the drilled or routed hole in the post that receives the rail tenon or tapered end. If the hole diameter is too large, or if the rail end has dried and shrunk after installation, the rail sits low in the pocket and transfers load through friction rather than bearing. Under gravity and load, the rail slowly drops until it contacts the bottom of the mortise bore, at which point midspan sag is already visible.
Fix: Remove the sagging rail. Inspect the mortise. If the hole is clean and round but oversized, the options are: pack the mortise with a wood shim or epoxy fill to restore the bearing surface, or replace the post section with correctly sized mortise holes. If the rail tenon has shrunk, re-cutting a slight taper on the tenon end and driving a wedge behind it can re-engage the bearing. For a permanent repair on a high-visibility section, replacement of both rail and post with correctly matched stock is the cleanest outcome.
Field check: The mortise diameter should match the rail end diameter within 1/8 inch. More than 1/4 inch of play is a loose fit.
Repair priority
Sag up to 3/4 inch at midspan is cosmetic on a rural split-rail installation. Sag over 1.5 inches compromises the fence's ability to guide livestock or define a boundary effectively and should be addressed within one season. Any sag combined with a loose mortise accelerates post rocking under lateral load and should be treated promptly.
Documentation for the work order
Note the span length, rail diameter (measured at center of span and at tenon), estimated moisture content if a meter is available, and mortise play measurement. Photograph the sag with a level or straight edge held alongside the rail for scale. This documents the condition before repair and supports the material charge for replacement rails.
