Just Reset The Post And It Leans Again Post Service Decision Tree
Why this matters
You reset the post a week ago. The customer calls and the post is leaning the same direction as before. A reset-and-lean-again callback is one of the most damaging events to a fence contractor's reputation because the customer assumes the reset was wrong; in reality, the reset was usually correct but the cause was not the post, it was the conditions around the post. The four typical survivors are soil that was wet or improperly tamped, footing depth that did not clear frost, a slope-driven lateral load the post cannot resist, and downstream tension from the rest of the fence pulling the post out of plumb. This tree separates which one survived so the second visit does not also repeat the same fix.
Symptom presentation
Walk the post with the customer and characterize the new lean:
- Same direction as the original lean: the cause was not the post itself.
- Opposite direction: the reset overcorrected and the post is now resisting the original load wrong.
- Lean only at the top, base solid: tension from the rest of the fence is pulling.
- Lean throughout, post rocks at the base: footing not gripping.
- Lean after the first freeze cycle: frost. Lean after the first heavy rain: water.
- Lean on a slope, downhill side: lateral load and soil creep.
Take a tape measurement of the lean magnitude and a plumb check. Document both for the file.
Quick checks
- Push the post laterally with both hands. A post that rocks at the base says the footing is not bound to the soil. A post that flexes at the top but does not move at the base says tension from the fence.
- Probe the soil at the base with a steel rod. Soft, wet soil tells you the soil was not consolidated. Dry, firm soil tells you the soil was fine and the cause is elsewhere.
- Check the footing depth if you can. If the original hole was at or above the local frost line, the post will lean again every freeze.
- Look at the line of posts adjacent to this one. If the next two posts lean the same way, this is not a single-post problem.
Isolation tree
- Post rocks at base, soil at base soft: footing or soil. Go to the footing branch.
- Post solid at base, leaning from the top, fence panels pulling: tension. Go to the tension branch.
- Lean appears after first freeze, base still solid in summer: frost. Go to the frost branch.
- Lean on a slope, downhill direction, base shifting: slope load. Go to the slope branch.
- Multiple adjacent posts leaning the same direction: systemic. Go to the systemic branch.
- Wood post leaning with rot at grade: wrong cause. Go to the rot branch.
Footing branch:
- Concrete footing with insufficient bell at the base or set in a wet hole: pour and tamp did not bind. Re-dig wider, fresh concrete on dry compacted base.
- Tamped gravel footing in clay soil that the gravel cannot key into: switch to concrete or add a larger bell at the bottom.
- Hole too narrow for the post size: a 4 inch wood post in a 6 inch hole has no working concrete around it. Re-dig at minimum 3x the post diameter.
Tension branch:
- Stretched chain link or tensioned wood with the line pulling toward the corner: install a proper corner or end brace assembly with a horizontal compression and diagonal tension wire.
- Aluminum or vinyl panels carrying wind load to a corner post: corner posts need larger footings and possibly braces.
Frost branch:
- Footing terminates above the local frost depth: re-dig to below frost depth (typically 32 to 48 inches in cold-winter regions; verify locally).
- Add a bell at the bottom of the new hole so the frost wedge has less surface to grip.
- Backfill with non-frost-susceptible material (clean gravel) around the upper third.
Slope branch:
- Downhill posts on a slope take both vertical load and lateral creep. Deeper footing, larger diameter, and downhill batter help.
- Posts at the base of a slope may need a retaining solution behind them, not just a deeper hole.
Systemic branch:
- Multiple posts leaning the same direction is a fence-design issue. Re-evaluate corner bracing, panel sail loading, or the run length between tension assemblies.
Rot branch:
- A wood post at grade with rot in the lower third leans because the post is failing, not the footing. Replace the post with a treated grade rated for ground contact (AWPA UC4A or higher).
Confirming diagnosis
- Push test before any other work. Movement at the base versus the top tells you footing versus tension immediately.
- Probe to footing depth with a tape. Compare to the local frost depth published by the building department.
- Sight along the line of posts. A whole-run lean is never one-post.
- Soil moisture at the base: a hose, a probe, and 20 minutes of soaking tells you whether the original install hit wet soil.
Remediation
- Footing: re-dig to 3x post diameter and below frost, concrete bell at the bottom, dry consolidated backfill.
- Tension: install or restore corner brace assemblies; tension only between properly braced ends.
- Frost: footing below local frost depth, gravel collar above to break the freeze wedge.
- Slope: oversize footing, downhill batter, or retaining behind the post.
- Systemic: bracing redesign at corners and runs.
- Rot: replace post with UC4A or better treated material; use steel for chronic ground-contact failure zones.
