Chain Link Loosens Again After Retension Decision Tree
Why this matters
You re-tensioned a sagging chain-link fabric and it went slack again within weeks. Loose chain-link looks neglected, lets the fabric bell out, and on a security or containment fence it defeats the purpose. Re-pulling the fabric only works if the system that holds the tension is sound. When slack returns fast, the tension is leaking out somewhere: a terminal (corner/end/gate) post leaning in, a stretched or fatigued fabric, a missing or broken tension wire, or hardware (bands, bars, ties) that slipped. This tree isolates where the tension is going so the second pull holds instead of feeding another lean.
Symptom presentation
Confirm the slack pattern:
- Fabric belly sags between line posts, terminal posts plumb: tension lost at the ends or top/bottom restraint.
- A terminal post leans toward the run: the post is being pulled in and giving back the tension you added.
- Fabric is wavy/diamonds distorted, will not pull straight: the fabric is overstretched or fatigued.
- Fabric pulls tight but the bottom flaps and bellies out: missing or loose bottom tension wire.
Push on the fabric mid-bay. A taut fence barely moves; a fence that swings several inches has lost real tension somewhere upstream.
Quick checks
- Plumb the terminal (end, corner, gate) posts. A terminal post that leans in when the fabric is tensioned has an inadequate footing and is bleeding off your pull. This is the most common repeat cause, and terminal posts carry the full tension load while line posts only space the fabric.
- Confirm the terminal posts are braced. A correctly built run has a horizontal brace rail and a diagonal truss rod with a turnbuckle from each terminal post back to the first line post. Missing or slack bracing lets the terminal post pull in no matter how big the footing.
- Inspect the tension bars and bands at each terminal. A bent bar, a stripped or missing band bolt, or too few bands lets the fabric edge pull free. Count bands against the fabric height.
- Check top and bottom tension wires. A broken, unattached, or missing bottom tension wire lets the fabric belly even when the fabric itself is tight.
- Examine the fabric for stretch/fatigue. Elongated diamonds and a fabric that will not come square indicate the mesh is worn out, not just loose, and no amount of pulling restores a fatigued fabric.
Isolation tree
Start at the terminal posts.
- Terminal post leans in under tension: the footing cannot resist the pull. Go to the terminal-post branch.
- Terminal posts plumb and solid, fabric still goes slack: go to the hardware branch.
Terminal-post branch:
- Footing too small/shallow or heaved: reset the terminal post in a larger, deeper footing (terminal posts carry far more load than line posts and need a bigger footing). Add or correct bracing/truss rods from the terminal post to the first line post so tension is resisted, not transferred into a lean.
Hardware branch:
- Tension bar bent or too few bands: replace the bar and add bands per spec (typically a band roughly every foot of fabric height), tighten band bolts.
- Top rail/tension wire loose or missing: secure the top rail or top tension wire; the fabric needs a tight top restraint to hold its shape.
- Go to the bottom-restraint branch if the bottom still bellies.
Bottom-restraint branch:
- Missing/broken bottom tension wire: install or repair a bottom tension wire (coiled spring/hog-ring tied) along the run. Without it the bottom flaps no matter how hard you pull the fabric.
Fabric branch:
- Fabric overstretched/fatigued (won't square, elongated diamonds): re-tensioning a worn fabric is futile. Replace the fabric in that run; reuse sound fabric only.
Tie branch:
- Fabric ties to line posts/top rail missing or sprung: re-tie at the proper interval (commonly about every 12 inches on posts and 24 inches on top rail) so the fabric stays attached to the framework.
Confirming diagnosis
- Terminal post: mark the post top with chalk, tension the fabric, and watch the mark against a fixed reference. Inward movement confirms the footing or bracing is the leak, not the fabric.
- Bracing: sight the truss rod. A truss rod that hangs slack while the fabric is tensioned is doing nothing; a working rod is taut and the brace rail is in compression.
- Hardware: after a fresh pull, the fabric should hold a hard push test at the bay center. If it loosens at the band or tension bar before the bay relaxes, the hardware is slipping and the band count or bar is the issue.
- Fabric: lay a straightedge across the diamonds. Permanently elongated mesh that will not square confirms fatigue, not slack, and tells you re-pulling is wasted labor.
Remediation
- Reset and upsize terminal post footings and install/repair truss-rod bracing to the first line post so tension is resisted at the ends.
- Replace bent tension bars, add bands to spec, and tighten all band bolts.
- Secure the top rail/top tension wire and install or repair the bottom tension wire so the fabric is restrained top and bottom.
- Re-tie the fabric to posts and rails at the correct intervals.
- Replace overstretched or fatigued fabric rather than re-pulling it.
