Cattle Fence vs No-Climb Horse Fence Selection
Why this matters
Cattle and horses use fences differently. Cattle test fences by leaning and pushing; horses test them by spooking, kicking, and running through. Specify a cattle fence on a horse property and a horse will go through it within the first year. The wire patterns, post spacing, and tension hardware are not interchangeable between the two livestock types.
Wire patterns and what they are designed for
Field fence (cattle-grade woven wire):
- Stay-wire spacing 6 to 12 inches, opening widens toward the top
- Common patterns: 1047-6 (10 line wires, 47 inches tall, 6-inch stays), 939-12 (9 wires, 39 inches, 12-inch stays)
- Designed for cattle, sheep, goats, hogs (with hog rings at the bottom)
- Inappropriate for horses: large openings can trap a horse hoof in a kick
No-climb horse fence:
- Uniform 2-by-4-inch mesh, top to bottom
- Common products: Red Brand Square Deal, Bekaert Solidlock 2x4, Stay-Tuff Fixed-Knot 2x4
- Mesh too small for a horse hoof to penetrate
- Designed specifically to prevent leg entrapment
V-mesh (diamond mesh) horse fence:
- Diagonally woven, no parallel openings at all
- Premium product, more expensive than no-climb
- Common around show barns and high-value stock
Barbed wire:
- Cattle: acceptable, traditional. 4 to 5 strands at 10 to 12 inch spacing
- Horses: never appropriate. Horses panic and run through, sustaining severe lacerations. Many state veterinary boards consider barbed wire on horse property a welfare issue.
Post spacing
Cattle fence on rolling pasture: line posts at 16 to 20 feet, with stays (droppers) every 6 to 8 feet. T-posts at 12 to 16 feet on a budget install.
Horse fence: line posts at 8 to 10 feet maximum, often 8 feet on center. The closer spacing keeps the fence from flexing when a horse leans on it. Stretch panels (between braced corner assemblies) should not exceed 660 feet (one roll of fence).
H-brace corner construction
Both fence types need braced corner assemblies because the wire is tensioned. Standard H-brace specification:
- Two posts 8 to 12 feet apart, both set deeper than line posts (typically 4 to 4.5 feet vs 3.5 feet)
- Horizontal compression brace across the top
- Diagonal tension wire (typically smooth 9 gauge) wrapped from the line-direction post bottom to the corner-post top, twisted with a twitch stick
- The brace assembly resists the pull of the entire run of fence
Skipping the brace assembly and just driving a stout corner post will let the corner pull in 1 to 3 feet under tension over the first few months.
Tension and stretchability
Cattle fence is typically high-tensile or low-carbon woven wire. High-tensile holds tension better but does not flex when an animal hits it; low-carbon flexes (cushions impact) but loses tension faster.
Horse fence specifically should have some give: the fixed-knot horse fences (Stay-Tuff, Bekaert Solidlock) hold their shape under impact, which is preferred for horse safety. Cheap utility-grade fence stretches and sags after the first kick.
Sight rail
Horse owners typically request a top sight rail (2x6 PT lumber, vinyl rail, or coated steel pipe) on top of the woven wire. Three reasons:
- Visibility: horses see the rail at face height and do not run into the fence
- Strength: the rail backs up the upper wire against pushing and chewing
- Aesthetics: rail-and-mesh combinations look like horse property
Cattle fences rarely need a sight rail because cattle are slower and less prone to spooking.
Electric supplement
Both fence types can be supplemented with electric:
- One hot wire on stand-off insulators at chest height, on the inside of the fence
- Stops cattle from leaning on the wire (the fence lasts twice as long)
- Stops horses from cribbing or pushing
- Energizer sized to the fence length: 1 joule per mile of fence is a rule of thumb for cattle, 0.5 joule per mile for horses
Polywire and polytape are appropriate for temporary cross-fencing but not for perimeter.
Gate construction differences
Cattle gates: 4 to 5 horizontal rails of 1.5-inch tube, 12 to 16 feet wide, often a tube gate from the farm-supply store
Horse gates: solid panels or close-spaced rail gates (rail spacing under 8 inches so a horse cannot get a leg through). Premium farms use mesh-infill gates matching the fence type.
Common failures
- Field fence on horse property: hoof entrapment in the upper mesh during a kick
- Undersized corner brace: corner pulls inward over the first year, slacks the fence
- T-posts on horse property without caps: horses impale themselves on uncapped T-post tops every year
- Barbed wire on horse property: laceration injuries on the first spook event
