Board-on-Board vs Shadowbox Privacy Fence Comparison
Why this matters
Both board-on-board and shadowbox produce a "privacy fence" appearance, but they perform differently for wind, sightline privacy, neighbor relations, and longevity. Customers usually ask for "the privacy fence with the alternating boards" without knowing which one they mean. Picking the right style for the lot exposure and the neighbor relationship saves callbacks for blow-overs and complaints about visibility.
Pattern definitions
Board-on-board (also called overlap, BOB): Vertical pickets fastened to the same side of the rails (typically the outside / street side), with each picket overlapping the previous picket by 1 to 1.5 inches. Looks one-sided: solid wall on the front, with visible vertical seams and stringers on the back.
Shadowbox (also called good-neighbor, alternating): Vertical pickets fastened alternately to opposite sides of the rails. Each picket is offset by roughly one-half its width from the adjacent pickets on the other side. Looks the same from both sides; produces a slight peek-through view when standing directly perpendicular and a fully solid view at any angle.
Privacy comparison
- Board-on-board: solid privacy from the outside (no gaps); slightly diminished from the inside because you can see the rail and picket structure
- Shadowbox: full privacy at any oblique angle; small peek-through directly perpendicular at close range
For pure privacy with no visibility through, board-on-board wins. Most customers find shadowbox privacy adequate and prefer the both-sides-look-good benefit.
Wind load and blow-over
This is where the two patterns diverge most significantly.
Board-on-board: acts as a solid wind sail. Effective area is roughly 95 percent of the fence face. In a 90 mph wind zone (basic wind speed per ASCE 7), a 6-foot tall board-on-board fence on standard 4x4 posts at 8-foot spacing approaches the limit of the post-and-footing assembly and will blow over in a microburst.
Shadowbox: acts as a partially permeable wind screen. Effective area is roughly 60 to 70 percent of the fence face, because wind passes between the offset pickets. Same post-and-footing assembly survives stronger gusts.
For high-wind locations (coastal, prairie, hilltop), shadowbox is structurally preferred or board-on-board requires upsized posts and footings.
Neighbor relations
- Board-on-board has a clear "good side" (the side with full overlap, no rails) and a "bad side" (the side with the visible rails). Decide before installing which side faces the neighbor, and document the decision.
- Shadowbox looks identical from both sides. Eliminates the "you gave me the ugly side" complaint.
In many jurisdictions, the finished side facing the neighbor is required by code or by HOA bylaws. Shadowbox sidesteps this entirely.
Material consumption
- Board-on-board: more lumber. A 6-foot tall, 100-foot long fence with 1.25-inch overlap uses roughly 30 to 35 percent more picket lineal footage than a butted picket fence.
- Shadowbox: similar to board-on-board in lumber count because both sides are picketed; lumber consumption is roughly equivalent.
Both styles use more lumber than a flat butted picket fence with a single rail of pickets.
Longevity
Both styles last roughly the same: limited by the post (post rots first) and the picket bottoms (ground splash). Two longevity factors apply equally:
- Picket bottoms held 2 inches off the ground to reduce splash and ground contact rot
- Posts set in well-draining concrete with a drainage stone at the base, or set in compacted gravel without concrete (the gravel method outlasts concrete in clay soils)
Maintenance differences
Board-on-board: stains and sealers can be applied to both sides but the back side rails are awkward to coat thoroughly.
Shadowbox: easier to coat thoroughly because the alternating pickets give bristle access to both faces of each picket.
Cost framing
Both patterns sit in the same general bucket: more expensive than a flat butted-picket privacy fence by a meaningful margin, and roughly the same as each other. Quoting the two side-by-side without separate line items invites confusion; itemize them.
When to use each
Pick board-on-board when:
- Customer prioritizes absolute visual privacy
- Wind exposure is low to moderate
- The "ugly side" faces the customer's own yard and the customer accepts the asymmetry
- A specific neighborhood architectural style (some HOAs require one or the other)
Pick shadowbox when:
- Customer wants both-sides-look-good
- Wind exposure is moderate to high
- The fence is on a shared line and either neighbor could end up looking at either side
- The HOA requires symmetric appearance
Common installation defects
- Inconsistent overlap on board-on-board (some sections 1 inch, others 1.5 inches) caused by stretching pickets to make a section come out even; cut a picket instead
- Shadowbox where the offset is too large, producing visible peek-through; offset should be picket-width minus 1/2 to 1 inch
- Failure to gap pickets at the top to allow drainage; standing water on the top rail rots pickets from the top down
- Direct-burying the bottom rail (or installing without a gap to grade); rots the bottom rail within 5 years
