Automated Gate UL 325 and ASTM F2200 Compliance

Why this matters

Automated gates kill and maim children. Every year, an automated gate fatality leads to a CPSC investigation and a national news cycle. UL 325 (gate operator standard) and ASTM F2200 (gate construction standard) are the two documents that, together, define a compliant install. Selling and installing an operator without bringing the gate itself into F2200 compliance is unprofessional, frequently illegal, and uninsurable when something goes wrong.

What UL 325 covers

UL 325 is the safety standard for door, drapery, gate, louver and window operators and systems. It classifies gate operators by usage:

  • Class I: residential, single-family, one to four units
  • Class II: commercial, general access by the public (apartments, condos, parking)
  • Class III: industrial, limited access by trained personnel
  • Class IV: restricted access, security guard or remote operation only, high-security

Each class has a required set of entrapment-protection devices. Class II (apartment complex) requires more sensors and more redundancy than Class I (single-family driveway).

UL 325 requires two independent monitored entrapment protection devices for nearly every modern operator. "Monitored" means the operator self-tests the sensor on every cycle and refuses to run if a sensor is broken.

Entrapment-protection devices

The acceptable devices recognized by UL 325:

  • Photoelectric sensors (photo eyes) on each side of the gate path, at heights that catch a small child (typically one set at 4 inches, one at 24 inches, one at 48 inches above ground)
  • Contact-edge sensors on the leading and trailing edges of the gate, on the bottom rail, and at every pinch point
  • Inherent reverse on obstruction (the operator detects load increase and reverses), provided the obstruction force does not exceed UL limits

A single inherent-reverse system without a secondary sensor does not meet UL 325 for Class I, II, or III operators.

What ASTM F2200 covers

ASTM F2200 (Standard Specification for Automated Vehicular Gate Construction) addresses the gate itself, not the operator. Key requirements:

  • The gate must be designed to minimize pinch, shear, and entrapment points
  • Pickets must not have openings that exceed 2.25 inches when the gate is in motion (so a child cannot get a hand through and have it crushed at a closing point)
  • Reachable rollers on slide gates must be covered or guarded
  • The gap between the gate and adjacent fixed structures must not exceed limits at the closed position
  • Wheel guards on cantilever slide gates must extend the full operating range
  • Vertical pickets must not protrude above the top rail in a way that creates an impalement hazard

A custom-built ornamental gate that meets the customer's aesthetic but fails F2200 cannot be legally automated.

The installer's responsibility

Both standards make the installer responsible for verifying compliance:

  • UL 325 requires installation of all entrapment-protection devices specified by the operator manufacturer for the chosen UL class
  • F2200 requires that the gate be modified or replaced if it does not meet construction requirements
  • Both require posted warning signage on each side of the gate (typically two diamond-shape decals with pinch-point warnings, supplied by the operator manufacturer)

Walking away from an install with one photo eye and no contact edges on a Class II apartment gate is malpractice.

Documentation to leave with the customer

  • UL 325 listing label on the operator (factory-supplied)
  • Manufacturer's installation manual with the device schedule completed
  • Photo eyes, contact edges, and warning placard locations marked on an as-built drawing
  • The owner's instructions for monthly self-test (open and close the gate while an obstruction is in the path)
  • A maintenance schedule (semi-annual lubrication, annual sensor verification)

Local AHJ requirements beyond UL and ASTM

Many jurisdictions require:

  • Electrical permit for the operator power supply (typically 120 V dedicated circuit with GFCI)
  • Knox box or similar emergency-access device for fire department
  • Posted address and emergency contact at the operator
  • Specific battery backup duration (4 hours minimum is common)

Verify these with the local building department before quoting an automated gate install.

A residential driveway gate operator that does not meet UL 325 (typically an imported unit purchased online) cannot be legally installed in any U.S. jurisdiction and will fail every insurance audit. Install only operators that bear the UL 325 listing label and that come with monitored entrapment-protection devices in the box.

When to refuse the job

Refuse and document the refusal if:

  • The customer wants to reuse a gate that fails F2200
  • The customer wants to omit entrapment devices to save cost
  • The customer wants the operator installed without permits where local code requires them
  • The customer wants you to install an unlisted operator

The liability exposure on an automated gate injury exceeds the revenue from any single residential job.
