Why this matters

The first thing you read on any flue is the deposit. Color and texture are a free diagnostic that points straight at the underlying burn fault before you run a single instrument. Dull gray powder, shiny black glaze, brown flaky scale, and white crystalline staining each mean something specific about how the appliance is running. A sweep who reads "shiny black glaze, two o'clock position" and stops at "needs cleaning" has missed the real message: this fire is starved for air or running too cool, and unless the operator changes behavior the glaze comes back next season - now a stage-3 fire hazard. This tree turns a single observable into a combustion diagnosis.

Symptom presentation

You scope the flue (visual plus camera) and find a deposit. Catalog it by:

  • Color: gray, tan/brown, dull black, glossy black, white/efflorescent, rusty orange.
  • Texture: fine powder, fluffy/feathery, hard flake, tar-like sticky, glassy/hard glaze, puffy "popcorn."
  • Location pattern: uniform vs. heaviest at one orientation, near the smoke chamber, at the cap.

The combination, not color alone, names the fault.

Quick checks

  1. Fuel and appliance - seasoned cordwood, unseasoned wood, pellets, oil, or gas. Read the nameplate and ask what they burn.
  2. Draft - magnehelic or smoke pencil at the appliance; weak draft drives cool, smoky, glaze-forming burns.
  3. Air settings - is the operator running the stove "dialed down" overnight (long smolder)?
  4. Moisture - moisture meter on a split from the woodpile; over ~20 percent water content guarantees creosote.
  5. Cap and crown - white staining and rust point to water, not combustion.

Isolation tree

Gray / tan fine powder, light, uniform. A clean-burning solid-fuel signature or normal gas-appliance soot. Combustion is reasonably complete. No combustion fault; routine sweep. If gray powder is unusually heavy on a gas appliance, suspect impingement or incomplete combustion - check burner alignment.

Brown, flaky, feathery scale (stage 1-2 creosote). Incomplete combustion from moderately cool flue-gas. Causes: somewhat wet wood, slightly low draft, or frequent low-air burns. Brushable. Diagnosis: tune wood moisture and burn hotter; recheck next season.

Glossy black, tar-like or hard glaze (stage 3 creosote). The serious one. Comes from cool flue-gas plus unburned volatiles condensing - classic overnight smolder, oversized flue for the appliance, unseasoned wood, or chronic poor draft. Hard glaze is fuel.

Stage-3 glazed creosote is a chimney-fire waiting to happen and standard brushing will not remove it. Do not certify the chimney for use until the glaze is mechanically removed (rotary chains/whips) or chemically converted and then removed, and the underlying cause (wet wood, smoldering burns, undersized draft) is corrected. A glaze that returns every season usually means an oversized or cold exterior flue that needs an insulated liner - clean it once and it comes right back.

Puffy gray "popcorn" / honeycombed, blistered, with warped damper or flue tiles. This is the post-chimney-fire signature, not a live combustion fault. Creosote that ignited expands into puffy carbon. Stop and treat as post-fire: escalate to a full interior video inspection for cracked tiles and breaches before any cleaning is certified.

Greasy black soot deposited suddenly through the appliance/room (oil/gas). Puffback - delayed ignition backfire. The flue itself may be a contributor (blockage) or a victim. Check for obstruction, then refer the combustion fault to a burner tech.

White / crystalline efflorescent staining, often with rust at the cap or wash. Water, not combustion. Efflorescence is mineral salts left by water passing through masonry; rust is a deteriorating damper/cap. Diagnose the water path (crown crack, failed cap, bad flashing), not the burn.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Scrape-test texture: powder wipes away, flake chips off, glaze resists a putty knife and shines where scratched - that resistance confirms stage 3.
  • Cross-check with draft and moisture readings: glaze plus wet wood plus a long-smolder habit is a closed case.
  • For popcorn/blistered deposits, confirm with the secondary tells (warped damper, blistered cap paint, flakes on the smoke shelf) before declaring a past fire.

Remediation

  • Powder/light flake: standard sweep; advise seasoned wood and hotter burns.
  • Stage-3 glaze: rotary removal or approved creosote modifier then removal; address the root cause (insulated liner for cold/oversized flue, burn-practice coaching). Re-inspect.
  • Popcorn/post-fire: out of service pending integrity inspection; reline or rebuild if tiles cracked.
  • Puffback: clear any obstruction, refer burner service, do not relight until corrected.
  • White staining/rust: water-intrusion repair (crown, cap, flashing); the flue deposit is a symptom.
