Why this matters
A failed or unlined chimney flue is a structural and life-safety problem - cracked tile cannot contain the flue gases per NFPA 211, and a Level 2 inspection that found tile damage is asking for a fix, not a sweep. The two dominant relining options - cast-in-place (Golden Flue, Ahrens, SupaFlu and similar poured cementitious systems) and stainless-steel flexible liner (HomeSaver, Olympia, Forever Flex and similar UL 1777 / UL 103 listed flex liners) - solve the same problem with very different cost, durability, and reusability profiles. What relining accomplishes
NFPA 211 requires a continuous flue liner that resists the products of combustion, contains heat to maintain draft, and prevents flue gases from contacting surrounding combustibles. When the original clay tile is cracked, spalled, or missing, the chimney is not code-compliant and is a documented carbon-monoxide and chimney-fire risk. Relining restores the continuous, gas-tight flue path without rebuilding the masonry chimney.
Stainless-steel flexible liner
Description - a corrugated or smooth-wall stainless tube (316Ti, 316L, or AL29-4C for high-corrosion service) lowered down the existing flue, connected to the appliance at the bottom and capped at the top, then surrounded by insulation (vermiculite pour, ceramic blanket, or factory-insulated double-wall liner).
Install profile:
- Camera inspect to verify clear path, measure flue dimensions, confirm offsets are manageable.
- Order liner cut to length plus connection components and the cap.
- Lower from the top, pull through offsets with a fish-tape or guide rope.
- Connect to the appliance breech.
- Pour or wrap insulation around the liner per the manufacturer's listing.
- Cap and flash at the top.

Cast-in-place liner
Description - a removable inflatable form is centered in the existing flue, a cementitious mix (high-temperature ceramic-modified cement) is pumped between the form and the existing flue walls, the mix is allowed to cure, and the form is deflated and pulled out. The result is a continuous, smooth, structurally bonded liner that also reinforces the existing chimney walls.
Install profile:
- Camera inspect, measure, and verify the chimney can accept the form.
- Set the inflatable form centered in the flue from top to bottom.
- Pump cementitious mix per the manufacturer's procedure (depth of pour, ratio, additives).
- Cure for the manufacturer-specified time (typically 24 to 72 hours).
- Deflate and remove the form.
- Camera inspect the finished liner for full coverage and no voids.

When stainless flex is the right call
- Existing chimney is structurally sound and just needs a gas-tight liner.
- Fuel may change in the future - wood today, gas in 5 years - flex can be pulled and replaced sized for the new appliance.
- The chimney has offsets that the form would not seat correctly through.
- The job needs to be completed in a single visit without a cure cycle.
When cast-in-place is the right call
- Existing chimney has minor masonry cracking or weakness that benefits from structural bonding.
- Long flue runs where flex liner cost rises sharply with length.
- Older oversized flue serving a modern appliance - cast lets the installer size the new flue diameter precisely.
- Permanent installation with no expected fuel change.
Oil-fired flue note
NFPA 31 (Standard for the Installation of Oil-Burning Equipment) requires liners compatible with oil flue gas. Sulfuric acid condensate attacks 316 stainless aggressively. Choose AL29-4C super-ferritic flex for oil, or verify the cast-in-place product carries explicit oil-flue listing.
A liner installation that pinches, kinks, or leaves voids violates the UL 1777 listing and is an immediate carbon-monoxide and chimney-fire risk. Camera inspect the finished install from top to bottom before signing off. Any visible defect - a kink in flex, a void in cast - is rejected and the install corrected before the appliance is fired. Photo-document the post-install camera pass and include it in the customer file.
