Recurring Stage 3 Creosote After Cleaning Decision Tree
Why this matters
Stage 3 glazed creosote that re-forms within a single burning season after a complete cleaning means the cleaning was the symptom fix and something upstream is still wrong. Stage 3 by definition is a tar-like baked deposit that resists mechanical brushing; the underlying drivers are insufficient flue temperature, oversized flue, unseasoned wood, or improper burning practice. Repeated mechanical removal alone runs labor up and warranty exposure with it because each accumulation between visits is a chimney fire risk per NFPA 211. The right fix changes the burning conditions or the chimney configuration, not just the next cleaning interval.
Symptom presentation
Document the deposit profile from the prior cleaning and the current inspection. A glazed deposit found in the upper third of the flue with the lower flue relatively clean points to flue gas cooling too far before reaching the cap. A heavy deposit at the smoke chamber and lower flue with thinning above points to slow burning practice and incomplete combustion. A uniform heavy deposit through the entire flue points to wood quality or oversized flue.
Pull the appliance and the chimney dimensions. EPA Phase 2 certified wood stoves designed for natural draft typically specify a 6-inch round flue; venting that 6-inch stove into a 10-inch or 12-inch masonry flue produces enough gas velocity loss to drop flue temperature below the creosote condensation threshold of about 250 Fahrenheit. The vent ratio is the dominant geometric cause of recurring stage 3 in older brick chimneys connected to modern airtight stoves.
Quick checks at the appliance
Pull a moisture meter reading on the customer's wood pile. Properly seasoned wood for wood stove burning per the EPA Burn Wise program runs 15 to 20 percent moisture content; wood above 25 percent is wet enough to drop combustion temperature, produce excessive water vapor, and feed creosote at the rate the customer is seeing. A homeowner buying cordwood from a supplier and burning the same season is almost always at 25 to 35 percent moisture; the supply is the problem.
Check the appliance air control setting. An EPA Phase 2 stove burned with the air control closed past the manufacturer's minimum produces stage 3 deposit by design; the operator is choking combustion to extend burn time and the chimney pays the cost. Verify the homeowner's typical operating pattern.
Isolation tree
Start with vent ratio. If the appliance is a 6-inch stove vented into a 10-inch or larger flue without a stainless liner properly sized, the diagnosis is oversized flue regardless of any other contributing factor. A liner sized to match the appliance per NFPA 211 chimney standards is the durable fix. Reline with a 6-inch or 7-inch stainless flexible liner per UL 1777 listing and the stove's installation manual.
Vent ratio in spec: check fuel moisture. Pull a meter reading from a freshly split round in the customer's pile. Above 25 percent moisture is the diagnosis; the fix is supplier change, better storage, or longer seasoning. Customer education in writing on the work order is the work product when fuel is the cause.

Confirming the call
Document the flue dimensions, the appliance dimensions, the fuel moisture reading, the operating pattern observed or reported, and the prior cleaning interval. The five data points lock the diagnosis. Schedule a follow-up Level 2 NFPA 211 inspection at mid-season to verify the corrected pattern is holding; a 30-day or 60-day stage 3 return after corrective work needs reinvestigation, not just another cleaning.
Remediation by branch
Oversized flue: reline with a properly sized stainless steel liner per UL 1777, sized to the appliance per the installation manual and NFPA 211. The liner reduces the flue cross-section to the appliance's natural-draft sizing target, raises gas velocity, holds flue temperature above the creosote condensation threshold, and stops the recurrence. Document the liner manufacturer, model, diameter, and listing in the customer record.
Wet wood supply: educate the homeowner on the EPA Burn Wise moisture target and proper storage. Provide a moisture meter recommendation or a one-page handout. Document the conversation. Set the next cleaning at a 6-month interval to monitor; if the homeowner has changed the supply and storage, the deposit at 6 months should drop dramatically.

Appliance undersized for the heat load: quote a properly sized EPA Phase 2 stove or a supplemental heating change. The undersized stove being over-fired is a long-term safety issue regardless of the creosote.
NFPA 211 Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents, and Solid Fuel-Burning Appliances classifies a stage 3 glazed creosote condition as a chimney fire hazard requiring immediate corrective action. A chimney with documented stage 3 deposit that has not been remediated and that subsequently catches fire is an insurance and liability exposure for the property owner and the service company that last inspected it. The CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep credential and the equivalent NFI program both require the cleaning service to document the deposit class and recommend the remediation; a verbal note is not enough.
