Why this matters
A freshly installed liner that drafts poorly is a commissioning problem, and chasing it without a method burns hours and erodes the customer's confidence in work they just paid for. After a reline, weak draft almost always traces to one of a short list of install-side causes: the liner is mis-sized for the appliance, an offset or kink is choking flow, the termination height or cap is wrong, the insulation or connection is faulty, or the appliance and liner are simply mismatched. Because the chimney is new, the cause is in the install, not in decades of neglect. Working a disciplined sizing-offset-cap commissioning sequence isolates the fault on the same visit instead of leaving the customer with a brand-new liner that still spills smoke or fails to establish draft.
Symptom presentation
Characterize the poor draft precisely:
- Does it fail to start (no draft from cold) or fail to sustain (starts then weakens under load)?
- Smoke spillage at the appliance, sluggish fire, or a combustion appliance whose draft hood spills?
- Is it weather dependent (mild days, wind) or constant?
- What is the install? Liner diameter and length, number and angle of offsets, insulation type, termination height, and the appliance it serves (open fireplace, insert, stove, furnace, water heater). The appliance dictates the correct liner size, so capture it first.
Quick checks
- Verify sizing against the appliance. An oversized liner runs cool and drafts weakly, especially on an exterior chimney; an undersized liner chokes flow. Confirm the diameter matches the appliance manufacturer's specified flue size and the connected load.
- Inspect the run for offsets and kinks. A sharp bend, a crushed section, or excessive horizontal travel adds resistance and kills draft. Sight or camera the full length.
- Check the termination: minimum height above the roof and nearby obstructions, and the cap. An undersized, screened-over, or wrong-style cap restricts flow; a missing termination height creates wind interference.
- Confirm insulation. An uninsulated liner in a cold exterior chase stays cold, the flue gases cool, and draft collapses. Verify the liner was insulated or wrapped per the listing.
- Check the appliance-to-liner connection for leaks, a poor seal at the bottom, or a draft-robbing gap that admits dilution air.
Isolation tree
- Weak draft, liner clearly larger than the appliance's specified size, worse on a cold exterior chimney: oversizing. The flue cannot hold a warm, fast gas column; it runs cool and lazy.
- Choked or slow draft, liner smaller than spec or a long horizontal/offset run: undersizing or excessive flow resistance from offsets. The path is too restrictive.
- Starts fine, weakens in wind or fails to start on mild days, liner sized right: termination/cap issue or insufficient height; wind and cold dominate because the top is wrong.
- Cold, sluggish draft that never warms, exterior chase, no insulation: missing or inadequate insulation letting the flue gases cool.
- Spillage with the right size and a clear run: connection or seal fault at the appliance, or appliance-liner mismatch (wrong liner type for the fuel or appliance).
- Combustion appliance specifically: if a furnace/water heater vented into a relined chimney spills, suspect a mismatch between the appliance category and the liner, or a shared-vent sizing error.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm against the appliance manufacturer's venting requirements first, because they define the correct liner diameter, type, and termination; the install either met them or it did not. For sizing, compare the installed diameter and effective height to the manufacturer's table and the load; oversized and undersized both show on paper before you test. For offsets, a camera pass quantifies the actual restriction. For the cap and height, measure termination height above the roof and nearest obstruction and inspect the cap's free area. For insulation and connection, verify the listing requirements were met and pressure/smoke-test the connection for dilution-air leaks. A draft (manometer) reading at the appliance under firing conditions quantifies whether the draft meets the appliance's required value; this number, not impressions, settles the diagnosis. Re-test after each correction to confirm you fixed the right thing.
Remediation
- Oversizing: resize to the correct diameter for the appliance, or for an open fireplace correct to the proper ratio; insulating an exterior liner often recovers an oversize that is borderline.
- Undersizing or excessive offsets: re-run with the correct diameter and minimize bends; replace crushed sections and reduce horizontal travel.
- Termination/cap: correct the termination height and install a properly sized cap with adequate free area; use an anti-downdraft cap where wind is the trigger.
- Insulation: insulate or wrap the liner per its listing so flue gases stay warm and draft establishes.
- Connection/mismatch: re-seal the appliance connection and confirm the liner type is listed for the fuel and appliance; correct any category mismatch.
Document the corrected draft reading at the appliance as proof the commissioning passed.
A liner serving a combustion appliance (furnace, water heater, gas or oil appliance) that drafts poorly can spill carbon monoxide into the home. Do not leave such an appliance in service until it achieves the manufacturer's required draft and passes a spillage test; ensure working CO alarms are present. All liner work must conform to the liner's listing and the appliance manufacturer's venting instructions.
