How to Service Gas Logs and Gas Fireplaces

Why a sweep crew does this

A sweep tech who can also service gas fireplaces doubles ticket value at most homes. Approximately 65% of U.S. fireplaces are now gas (vented or vent-free); customers expect both wood + gas service from "the chimney company." Gas-log service runs; annual contract appeal is strong (set-it-and-forget-it like a furnace tune).

NOTE: gas work requires the appropriate state license + insurance. If you don't hold one, you can clean + inspect the chamber + venting but cannot touch the gas valve or burner orifice. Plan scope honestly.

Types of gas fireplaces

Vented gas logs (in an existing masonry fireplace): logs sit in a masonry firebox; flue is open. Looks like a real fire; least efficient (most heat goes up the flue). Damper must remain open.

Direct-vent: sealed glass front; concentric pipe pulls combustion air from outside + exhausts outside. Most efficient + safest. No room-air contamination.

Vent-free / ventless: open burner with no flue. Cheapest install; banned in some states (CA, WA portions). High humidity + CO risk in tight homes. Limited use per session per manufacturer (typically 4 hours max).

B-vent (older code): vents combustion gas up a flue but pulls combustion air from the room. Less common in new installs.

Identify the type before quoting service. Different procedures apply.

Annual service procedure (vented gas logs)

Step 1: Confirm gas off + cool

  1. Confirm pilot off + main valve closed
  2. Verify firebox cool (no recent fire)
  3. Sniff for gas odor before starting; if smell, shut at meter + ventilate, call gas co

Step 2: Open damper + verify open

A blocked or partially-closed damper on a vented gas log unit is a CO + house-fire hazard. Some installers wire the damper permanently open with a clamp; verify clamp present.

Step 3: Remove logs

  1. Photograph current placement before moving
  2. Lift each log carefully; ceramic refractory logs break easily
  3. Set on a soft cloth in service order

Step 4: Clean burner

  1. Vacuum dust + cobwebs from burner ports (HEPA + soft brush)
  2. Inspect orifice for soot or spider webs (mud daubers love gas burners - common shutdown cause)
  3. Clean ports with brass brush or compressed air (NEVER drill bits - alters orifice)
  4. Inspect manifold connection for corrosion

Step 5: Clean ember bed + glowing embers

  1. Vacuum ember material out
  2. Inspect glowing fiber (ceramic wool) - replace if matted, oily, or burned-out spots ()
  3. Replace per manufacturer pattern - too much blocks ports + creates incomplete combustion

Step 6: Clean firebox + flue base

  1. Vacuum any soot or debris in firebox
  2. Inspect refractory panels (cracks, soot patterns indicating poor combustion)
  3. Mirror up the throat: damper open + clear?
  4. Verify flue cap intact (separate inspection scope; flag for quote if missing)

Step 7: Pilot + thermocouple

  1. Light pilot per manufacturer sequence
  2. Verify pilot flame envelops thermocouple tip (50% min coverage)
  3. Test millivolt output with multimeter (typically 25-30 mV minimum)
  4. Weak pilot = clean orifice or replace thermocouple ( part, labor)

Step 8: Test main burner + flame quality

  1. Open main valve + verify ignition
  2. Flame color: yellow tips OK (vented logs are designed for it), but solid yellow = improper combustion. Should be mostly blue at the base
  3. Flame height per manufacturer
  4. CO test at firebox opening (room should be < 9 PPM with fireplace burning) - fail = stop service + investigate

Step 9: Replace logs in pattern

  1. Place per manufacturer pattern + your initial photo
  2. Verify no log obstructs a burner port
  3. Verify no log touches glowing embers in front of port
  4. Front log MUST sit per manual; off-spec placement creates carbon monoxide + sooting

Step 10: Customer briefing

  1. Demonstrate ignition
  2. Show damper position (open, locked open if applicable)
  3. Recommend annual service
  4. Caution about glass surround temperature
  5. Confirm CO detector in same room within 15 ft

Direct-vent annual service

Adds:

  • Remove glass front per manufacturer (gasket inspection + replacement)
  • Inspect concentric vent termination (bird nest, rust, displacement)
  • Inspect outside vent screen
  • Glass cleaning with manufacturer-approved cleaner (NOT ammonia; etches coating)

Acceptance criteria

  • Pilot lights + holds
  • Main burner ignites cleanly
  • Flame pattern matches manufacturer spec
  • No gas leaks (soap-test connections)
  • CO levels < 9 PPM at firebox during operation
  • Customer signed work order

Common pitfalls

  • Doing gas work without a license: state-level liability + insurance void
  • Drilling out clogged orifice: changes gas flow rate; entire valve must be replaced ()
  • Wrong log placement: causes yellow-flame sooting + CO
  • Not testing CO: missed life-safety check
  • Replacing thermocouple without verifying pilot flame envelopment: same failure returns 6 months later
  • Ignoring damper closed on vented logs: CO into the room, possible fire if logs ignite room air

Safety considerations

  • Gas leak protocol: shut at meter, ventilate, evacuate, call gas company. Do NOT spark
  • CO detector mandatory + tested at every visit
  • Carbon monoxide is colorless + odorless + cumulative
  • Combustion-air starvation in tight new homes - verify outside-air provisions
  • Vent-free units: max 4 hours per session per most manufacturers; tell customer

A vent-free gas appliance in a bedroom is a code violation in nearly every U.S. jurisdiction (NFPA 54). If you arrive at a service call + find a vent-free unit installed in a bedroom, document, photograph, leave it OFF, refuse to commission, + write up a quote to either remove or convert. The liability of relighting it is not worth the service fee.
