A homeowner pays for a new chimney liner, and the appliance that drafted fine before now backdrafts - smoke or flue gases spill into the room on startup or all the time. The callback feels like the install broke something, and on a clay or fuel-burning chimney that spillage can carry carbon monoxide. The truth is usually one of a handful of liner-specific causes: the new liner is the wrong size (almost always too large, occasionally too small) for the appliance, it was not insulated where insulation was needed, the termination height or rain cap restricts flow, or the liner change merely exposed a pre-existing house-pressure problem that the old, leakier flue masked. Sorting which one drives the reversal decides whether you resize the liner, insulate it, fix the termination, or send the homeowner to a combustion-air or makeup-air fix. Guessing wastes a return trip and leaves a CO exposure in place.

Does draft reverse when an exhaust appliance runs? If yes, the home is depressurized; the new, tighter, smaller liner has less leakage to fight back with, so a pre-existing pressure imbalance now wins. The fix is combustion/makeup air, not the chimney. If nothing depressurizes the house and the liner is sized, insulated, and properly terminated, re-verify the appliance-to-liner connection for leaks and the flue is clear.

For insulation: wrap or pour-insulate the liner so it heats quickly and holds stack temperature, especially in exterior or large chases. For termination: fit a correctly sized cap with adequate flow area and bring the termination to the required height above the roof and nearby structure. For house pressure: provide combustion or makeup air for the appliance and address the depressurizing exhaust loads - this is a building-pressure fix, not a chimney rebuild.
