Customer Reports Clicking Or Ticking From The Flue: Expansion Vs Animal Translation Decision Tree

Why this matters

"There's a clicking or ticking sound coming from the chimney" is a complaint that splits cleanly into two very different worlds: thermal expansion of metal components, which is harmless and self-resolving, and an animal in the flue, which is a removal-and-exclusion job. The translation matters because the responses are opposite. If you tell a customer "it's just the metal expanding" when a squirrel is trapped on the smoke shelf, the animal dies, decays, and you get a much worse call in a week. If you charge for an animal removal when the sound is a stainless liner ticking as it heats up, you have sold a job that did not exist. Reading the sound's timing, pattern, and triggers, and tying it to the chimney's construction, sorts expansion from animal before you ever open the cleanout.

Symptom presentation

Pin down the character and timing of the noise:

  • Timing relative to use. Does the ticking happen as the appliance heats up and then again as it cools down, or does it occur independent of any fire?
  • Pattern. A rhythmic, regular tick that tracks temperature change suggests metal movement. Irregular scratching, scrabbling, fluttering, or chirping suggests a living thing.
  • Time of day and season. Animals are often most active at dawn and dusk and nest in spring and early summer. Expansion noise tracks burn cycles and outdoor temperature swings.
  • Construction. Is there a metal liner, a metal chase, or a factory-built (metal) chimney? Metal components are what tick thermally. An all-masonry flue with no metal is far less likely to make expansion noise.

Quick checks

  1. Correlate the sound with the appliance. Light a fire (or run the heating appliance) and listen: a tick that appears as metal heats, pauses at steady state, and returns during cooldown is classic thermal expansion of a metal liner or connector.
  2. Listen for movement. Scratching that moves, fluttering, chirping, or scrabbling that changes location is an animal, not metal. Metal ticks stay put and follow temperature, not its own will.
  3. Check the cap and screen. A missing or damaged cap is the entry point that makes an animal plausible; an intact, screened cap makes animal intrusion much less likely.
  4. Look and smell. A camera pass up the flue can reveal nesting material, debris, or the animal itself; a decayed or musky odor accompanying the sound points strongly to an animal.
  5. Note independence from fire. Sounds that occur with no fire and no temperature change are almost never expansion.

Isolation tree

  • Rhythmic ticking that starts as the appliance heats, quiets at steady temperature, and returns on cooldown, metal liner or factory-built chimney present: thermal expansion. The metal grows and slides against supports or masonry as it changes temperature. Harmless.
  • Irregular scratching, fluttering, chirping, or scrabbling, often at dawn/dusk, independent of any fire, frequently with a missing or damaged cap: animal in the flue. Could be a bird, squirrel, raccoon, or their nest.
  • Ticking independent of fire but tracking large outdoor temperature swings (a metal chase heating in the sun): still thermal expansion, just driven by solar/outdoor temperature rather than a fire.
  • Sound plus a decayed or ammonia odor: animal, likely a nest, droppings, or a dead animal; prioritize removal.
  • Tapping that only occurs in rain or wind: not an animal and not expansion, but a loose cap, flashing, or chase component moving; a hardware fix.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm expansion by reproducing it with the heat cycle: if the tick reliably appears when the metal heats and again when it cools and is absent when temperatures are stable, it is thermal movement, and it usually correlates with a metal liner or factory-built chimney. Confirm an animal by direct evidence, sight or sound of movement, nesting material, droppings, or an odor, and by an entry path such as a missing or compromised cap. The decisive separator is volition and independence: animal noise moves and occurs without any temperature change; expansion noise is tied to heating and cooling and does not relocate. When uncertain, a camera inspection of the flue and smoke shelf settles it, and listening at quiet times of day for self-directed movement distinguishes a creature from physics.

Remediation

  • Thermal expansion: reassure the customer that it is normal metal movement and harmless. Verify the liner and connectors are properly supported and have the clearances and expansion allowances their listing requires; if a component is loose or improperly fastened, secure it so the movement is quiet and within spec.
  • Animal present: remove the animal or nest humanely and any droppings or debris, then install or repair a code-compliant cap with an animal-excluding screen so it cannot return. Confirm any live animal is out before capping; never seal a live animal inside.
  • Decayed animal/odor: remove the carcass and contaminated nesting material, clean and deodorize the affected area, and address moisture if present.
  • Loose hardware noise in wind/rain: secure the cap, flashing, or chase cover so it stops moving.

Never cap or seal a chimney while a live animal may be trapped inside; the animal must be confirmed out first. Bird and bat droppings can carry pathogens; use appropriate respiratory protection and follow safe-handling and disposal practices when removing nests and accumulated droppings.
