Customer Burned Wrong Fuel Before Call: DIY-Induced Decision Tree
Why this matters
Customers burn what they have, what they were given, or what they read about online. By the time they call, the wrong fuel has already been through the system, sometimes for one event and sometimes for a full season. The damage profile depends entirely on what they burned and how the appliance responded. This decision tree gets the sweep from the phone call to a defensible scope of work without missing latent damage that will not show up on a Level 1 inspection.
Section 1: Identify what they actually burned
The customer's description is rarely complete. Ask specifically.
Categories to probe:
- Unseasoned or wet cordwood (moisture content above approximately 20 percent)
- Softwoods (pine, fir, spruce, cedar) in an appliance and chimney sized for hardwood
- Pressure-treated lumber, painted wood, plywood, OSB, or other manufactured wood products
- Construction debris, pallets (often heat-treated or chemical-treated), or scrap lumber of unknown origin
- Garbage, cardboard, glossy paper, junk mail
- Coal in a wood-only appliance or wood in a coal-only appliance
- Manufactured logs (wax-and-sawdust pressed logs) in an appliance not rated for them, or stacking multiple manufactured logs at once
- Christmas tree, brush, leaves, evergreen needles
- Charcoal indoors in any solid-fuel appliance not specifically rated for it
- Accelerants used to start fires (gasoline, kerosene, lighter fluid beyond label use)
- Wrong fuel in a gas-only appliance (wood or paper in a gas log fireplace)
The damage profile is different for each category, and the inspection scope follows from the fuel category.
Section 2: Match the fuel to the likely damage
Unseasoned wood:
- Heavy Stage 1 and Stage 2 creosote deposition (sooty, flaky, then tar-like)
- Lower flue gas temperatures, more condensation, increased glazed creosote risk in the upper flue
- Possible cap and screen clogging from particulate
- Inspect for creosote stages 1 through 3 throughout flue
Softwoods in a hardwood-rated system:
- Faster creosote accumulation per cord burned
- Otherwise similar damage profile to unseasoned wood
- Educate on burn frequency and sweep cadence
Pressure-treated, painted, or manufactured wood products:
- Chemical residues (chromated copper arsenate from old CCA-treated lumber, formaldehyde from particle products, lead from old paint)
- Health risk to occupants from indoor air contamination if smoke spilled
- Possible flue corrosion from chemical combustion products
- Inspect liner for corrosion, especially metal liners; consider air quality conversation with customer
Garbage, cardboard, glossy paper:
- Highly variable combustion temperatures and fly ash production
- Glossy paper inks can deposit on flue walls
- Possible chimney fire risk from rapid uncontrolled burn
- Inspect for thermal damage indicators (see Section 4)
Coal in a wood appliance:
- Coal burns at higher temperatures than wood appliances are designed for
- Sulfur compounds in combustion gases corrode liners and masonry
- Possible firebox warping, grate damage, baffle damage
- Inspect appliance integrity, not just flue
Manufactured logs stacked or in wrong appliance:
- Wax content produces intense, hot flame
- Stacking multiple logs can cause flue overheating
- Inspect for thermal damage indicators
Accelerants:
- Risk of immediate firebox or flue overpressure event
- Possible damper deformation, cap deformation, masonry cracking
- Inspect for blast damage indicators
Wrong fuel in gas-only appliance:
- Gas logs and inserts are not rated for solid fuel
- Ceramic logs may have cracked from impact or thermal shock
- Burner pan and venting may have soot deposition that compromises future gas operation
- Service required before returning to gas operation
Section 3: Run the right inspection level
NFPA 211 inspection levels apply.
- Level 1: routine annual inspection, accessible portions, no special tools beyond flashlight and mirror
- Level 2: video scan of full flue, required after any event likely to have caused damage, change of appliance, or change of fuel category
- Level 3: removal of components to access concealed portions, required when Level 2 reveals or strongly suspects hidden damage
A DIY-burned wrong fuel event is, by NFPA 211 language, an event likely to have caused damage when the fuel was outside the appliance's rated range or when a thermal event (suspected chimney fire) occurred. Default to Level 2 for any case beyond seasoned-but-soft wood in an appropriate appliance.
Section 4: Look for chimney fire indicators
A wrong-fuel burn that hit high temperatures may have caused a chimney fire the customer never noticed. Quiet chimney fires happen.
Inspect for:
- Puffy, honeycombed, or expanded creosote (signature of a chimney fire that did not get hot enough to fully consume the deposit)
- Discolored or warped metal components (cap, damper, liner sections)
- Cracked flue tiles, especially on the upwind side or at offsets
- Crumbling or spalled mortar joints
- Heat damage to roof framing or combustibles near the chimney chase
- Discolored exterior masonry above the cap, indicating high exhaust temperatures
- Distorted rain cap or storm collar
A chimney that has had any chimney fire event, suspected or confirmed, must not be returned to service until a full Level 2 (and Level 3 if indicated) inspection confirms structural integrity of the flue, liner, and surrounding combustibles. Continued use of a damaged flue is a structure fire risk. CO alarms must be verified working before any return to operation.
Section 5: The customer conversation
The customer made a mistake. Sometimes a small one, sometimes a large one. The conversation works better when it focuses on what they need to know now, not what they should have known then.
Cover:
- What they burned and why that matters (specific to their category)
- What you found during inspection
- What can return to service as-is, what needs cleaning, what needs repair, what cannot be safely used until repaired
- What fuels are appropriate for their specific appliance (give them the appliance manufacturer's fuel specification or the equivalent if the appliance is generic masonry)
- Storage and seasoning guidance for cordwood (split, stacked off the ground, top-covered but sides open, ideally 1 to 2 years for hardwoods)
- Moisture meter recommendation; under 20 percent moisture content is the practical target for clean burning
- CO alarm verification
Section 6: Documenting the work order
The work order protects both parties.
Document:
- Customer's reported fuel use, in their own words if possible
- Inspection level performed (1, 2, or 3) and why that level was appropriate
- Findings, with photos of any damage
- Stages of creosote found (1, 2, 3) and where
- Scope of work performed today
- Scope of work recommended but not performed today, with reasoning
- Return-to-service status (clear to burn appropriate fuel, do not burn until further repair, etc.)
- Customer acknowledgment of fuel guidance and return-to-service status
