Chimney Types and Components Reference

Why this reference exists

A sweep tech walks into 30+ different chimney builds in a typical year. Naming the parts correctly closes sales (customer trust), routes scope correctly (sweep vs reline vs rebuild), and keeps insurance documentation defensible. This reference covers every component a U.S. residential chimney could have, what it does, + how to inspect it.

Chimney types

Masonry chimney: brick, block, or stone shell with clay tile liner. Most common in homes built before 1990. Lifespan 75+ years if maintained; failure points are crown, liner, + flashing.

Prefab / factory-built (zero-clearance): double or triple-wall stainless metal pipe in a chase. Common in homes 1980-present. UL-listed assembly; the entire stack must match the manufacturer. Lifespan 15-25 years.

Insulated metal (Class A pipe): outside-mounted stainless pipe for wood stoves + furnaces. Brand-specific (DuraVent, Selkirk, Metalbestos).

Direct-vent / sealed combustion: gas appliance vents that pull combustion air from outside + exhaust through a concentric pipe. Not a "chimney" in the traditional sense; sweep does not apply.

Masonry chimney components (top to bottom)

Chimney cap: hood + mesh over the flue opening. Blocks rain, animals, embers. Sweep upsell. (See Install Chimney Cap.)

Crown (wash): the concrete or mortar slab on top of the chimney that sheds water off the masonry. Most common failure point. A cracked crown lets water into the chimney shell + accelerates freeze-thaw damage. Crown rebuild. Crown coat (interim, 5-7 year life).

Flue / flue tile: the inner channel that carries smoke. Clay tile (residential standard), pumice, or stainless liner. Sized to the appliance (rule of thumb: flue area = 10% of fireplace opening for a working draft).

Liner: the lining material inside the flue. Clay tile is original; stainless steel liner is the modern fix when tile cracks. Required by NFPA 211 for all wood-burning + most gas applications.

Smoke chamber: the funnel above the firebox that compresses smoke into the flue. Old construction: corbeled brick steps. Modern construction: parged smooth slope (required by IRC + code update post-2009). Rough chambers drag smoke + cause smoking fireplaces.

Smoke shelf: the horizontal ledge at the back of the smoke chamber that catches downdraft + debris. 30-40% of nest material + glaze sits here. Hand-clean every sweep.

Damper: the metal plate that closes the flue. Two types - throat damper (in the smoke chamber, often rusted shut) + top-mount damper (cap-mounted, rope-operated). Top-mount stops 90% of conditioned-air loss; throat damper stops only 50%.

Firebox: where the fire burns. Built of firebrick + refractory mortar. Cracks here are a safety issue (heat to combustible framing). Refractory panel replacement; rebuild.

Hearth: the floor extension in front of the firebox. Must extend 16" forward + 8" past each side per IRC. Combustible flooring inside this area is a code violation.

Lintel: steel or stone bar above the firebox opening that supports the chimney mass.

Ash dump / ash pit: trapdoor in the firebox floor leading to a basement ash chamber. Old construction only; modern firebox lacks it.

Cleanout door: small metal door at the chimney base (basement or exterior) for removing fallen creosote. Verify accessible at every sweep.

Flashing: metal at the roof-to-chimney transition keeping water out. Step flashing + counterflashing. Most common roof leak source after the cap.

Prefab chimney components

Triple-wall pipe: stainless or galvanized inner + outer skins with air gap insulation. Brand-specific.

Termination cap: the manufactured top of the prefab system. NOT interchangeable with masonry caps; must match the pipe brand.

Storm collar: rubber + metal seal where pipe penetrates the chase top.

Chase + chase cover: the wood-framed box around the prefab pipe + the sheet-metal lid on top. Chase covers fail (rust through) - replacement.

Firestop / radiation shields: metal plates at each floor penetration. Code-required clearances to combustibles. Missing or bypassed = recall on the original install.

Refractory panels: replaceable firebox liner panels. Crack regularly; replacement.

Liner options

Clay tile: original residential standard. Brittle; cracks from rapid heating, water, or chimney fire. foot to replace (whole-chimney rebuild).

Stainless steel liner: drop-in fix for cracked tile. UL-1777 (wood) or UL-1738 (gas) listed. Cost installed for typical residential. Lifetime warranty common.

Cast-in-place (HeatShield, Smoktite): poured ceramic that fills gaps + relines without removing tile..

Pumice liner: ceramic insulating tile (Schiedel, etc.). Better insulation than clay, similar cost. Less common in U.S.

Sizing rules

Flue cross-section to fireplace opening:

Opening style Ratio
Standard rectangular 1:10 (flue is 10% of opening)
Tall narrow Rumford 1:12 (works better with smaller flue)
Multi-sided / corner 1:8 (needs more draft)
Above 2000 ft elevation Add 5% to flue area

Wood stove: follow appliance label (typically 6", 7", or 8" diameter pipe matching the stove flue collar).

Common reading + measurement

  • Inside flue diameter / dimensions
  • Outside flue tile dimensions (for cap sizing)
  • Chimney height above roof penetration (need 3 ft above roof + 2 ft above anything within 10 ft per code)
  • Damper opening clearance
  • Smoke chamber dimensions
  • Firebox opening size + depth

Photograph + record all of these on first sweep. Saves remeasure on every future visit.

Code minimums (NFPA 211 + IRC)

  • Annual inspection required
  • Sweep when 1/8" creosote present
  • Cap required (spark arrestor + animal screen)
  • Clean-out door required + accessible
  • 2" clearance to combustible framing (masonry); follow manufacturer for prefab
  • Hearth extension 16" front, 8" sides
  • Chimney height: 3 ft above roof, 2 ft above ridge within 10 ft

The crown is the #1 failure mode that techs miss because it's hidden behind the cap. A cracked crown costs to fix; left alone for 3 years it lets water saturate the masonry, freeze, + collapse interior brick. Always inspect the crown when you're on the roof - even on a routine sweep. Photograph + flag any visible cracks; it's a 6-month-to-1-year follow-up sale.
