Dishwasher Not Draining - Decision Tree

Why this matters

The "dishwasher not draining" complaint covers seven distinct root causes, six of which are field-fixable on the first visit and one of which requires plumbing. A technician who walks in without a decision tree will swap the drain pump (the most expensive part) and find the actual problem was a clogged air gap or a kinked drain hose, costing the customer for a part that did not need replacement and burning the trust the next call needed. This decision tree resolves the diagnosis in 20 minutes with a multimeter, a flashlight, and a flat-blade screwdriver.

Symptom definition

"Not draining" means standing water sits in the tub at the end of a cycle. Confirm before diagnosing:

  • Look at the bottom of the tub immediately after the customer reports the symptom.
  • Standing water below the filter basket OR up to the heating element is the symptom.
  • Standing water in the upper rack area indicates a separate problem (water inlet valve stuck open) - exit this tree.

Step 1 - Check the disposer plug

The plumbing code requires a knockout plug in the disposer's dishwasher inlet to be removed when the disposer is installed. New construction and DIY disposer replacements routinely leave the plug in place. The dishwasher pumps water into a sealed cavity, which the homeowner experiences as "won't drain."

Diagnostic: with the dishwasher off, run the disposer for 10 seconds. If it sounds normal but no water flows, the plug is likely in place. Disconnect the dishwasher drain hose from the disposer inlet and look down the fitting with a flashlight - if you see a solid plastic disc, that is the plug. Knock it out with a screwdriver and a tap from a small hammer. Fish the plug fragment out with needle-nose pliers so it does not enter the disposer impeller.

This is the #1 cause on first-year installations and on dishwasher additions to existing kitchens. Always check first.

Step 2 - Inspect the air gap

Many jurisdictions require an air gap on the countertop next to the faucet to prevent backflow contamination of the dishwasher. The air gap has two ports: a small inlet from the dishwasher's pump output and a larger outlet to the disposer or drain. Debris (food, broken glass, label scraps) lodges in the gap and partially blocks flow.

Diagnostic: remove the chrome cap on the air gap, then remove the plastic cover beneath it. Look for visible debris. Run a 12-inch piece of stiff wire through the inlet and outlet to clear any blockage. Reassemble and run a drain cycle.

Step 3 - Inspect the drain hose for kinks

The drain hose runs from the dishwasher pump under the cabinet to either the air gap or directly to the disposer. Common kink points:

  • Hose pinched behind the dishwasher when the unit was pushed back into the cabinet.
  • Hose routed under a recessed kick plate where a homeowner re-tucked it during a kitchen renovation.
  • Hose stretched too far during the original install with a hard bend at the disposer fitting.

Diagnostic: pull the bottom toe-kick off the dishwasher, then visually inspect the full hose run with a flashlight. Any visible bend tighter than 90 degrees is a candidate kink. Straighten and re-route. If the hose is permanently deformed, replace it - the kinked section has memory and will fail again.

Step 4 - Inspect the filter and sump

Modern dishwashers (post-2014 ENERGY STAR-compliant units, mostly) have a removable filter at the base of the tub. The filter traps food debris that previously went down the drain. Customers who never read the manual never clean the filter, and after 12 to 24 months of accumulation the filter packs solid.

Diagnostic: remove the lower spray arm and lift out the filter assembly. Look for food debris, glass shards, fruit pits, broken plastic. Clean the filter under running water with a soft brush. Inspect the sump (the recessed area beneath the filter) for the same debris. Clear by hand or with a wet/dry vacuum.

Step 5 - Check the drain pump for impeller obstruction

If Steps 1 through 4 are clear, suspect the drain pump itself. Before condemning the pump:

  • Cut power to the dishwasher at the breaker.
  • Access the drain pump (model-dependent - typically under the tub via the toe-kick).
  • Remove the pump cover or housing per the service manual.
  • Inspect the impeller for foreign objects. Broken glass, fruit pit fragments, twist ties, and toothpicks routinely jam the impeller.
  • Rotate the impeller by hand. If it turns freely, the pump is not mechanically locked.

If the impeller spins freely and no debris is present, proceed to Step 6.

Step 6 - Test the drain pump electrically

With power restored and the dishwasher in drain mode (consult the model-specific service mode entry sequence):

  • Probe the drain pump terminals with a multimeter set to AC volts. You should see 120 V AC during the drain portion of the cycle (or 240 V on European-market units - confirm by model).
  • If voltage is present and the pump is not running, the pump is electrically failed. Replace.
  • If no voltage is present, the control board or wiring harness is the cause. Trace the harness for damage, check the control board for the pump-drive relay, and replace whichever component is failed.

Never reach into a dishwasher tub or sump area while the unit is energized. The drain pump motor and heating element can carry line voltage with the door interlock satisfied. Cut power at the breaker, not at the door switch, before any inspection that requires hand or tool contact inside the appliance.

Step 7 - Plumbing-side check (last resort)

If everything inside the appliance is sound and the drain still pools, the kitchen drain line is the cause. The dishwasher pumps into a shared P-trap with the kitchen sink; a clogged trap or a venting failure produces "dishwasher won't drain" as a secondary symptom of a kitchen drain that is also slow.

Diagnostic: run the kitchen sink at full flow for 30 seconds. If the sink drains slowly or backs up, refer the customer to a plumber. Document in your Manuall job notes that the appliance scope is complete and the remaining issue is plumbing. Do not chase a plumbing problem under an appliance ticket.

The drain pump replacement is the LAST consideration, not the first. Work the tree top-down.
