Why this matters

Gray or black streaks running downward from an aluminum window frame onto the glass surface are one of the most common callbacks in exterior window cleaning. The instinct is to assume the cleaning left residue, but the correct attribution is the opposite: the cleaning mobilized aluminum oxide particles that were sitting on the frame surface. The glass cleaner did not cause the streaks; it moved them from the frame onto the glass. Misattributing this to technique or chemistry wastes a callback visit and does not fix the underlying cause. Understanding the cross-system origin - frame condition, not cleaning method - is what lets you explain it accurately to the customer, remove the streaks correctly, and turn the conversation into an upsell.

Confirming the source: the white-cloth wipe test

Before drawing any conclusions, wipe the aluminum frame with a damp white cloth and press firmly.

If the cloth transfers a gray or dark smudge, aluminum oxide is the source. The frame has weathered past the point where its surface coating protects the underlying aluminum. Weathered aluminum forms aluminum oxide (a chalky, gray-black powder) on the surface, and any water contact - rain, cleaning solution, or condensation - mobilizes those particles and carries them down onto the glass.

If the cloth comes back clean, the streak source is not frame oxidation. Check for hard water deposits running from a corroded sill, residue from a prior cleaning product, or screen debris.

Why the sequence of cleaning matters

The correct sequence for frames-plus-glass cleaning is: clean frames before glass.

When glass is cleaned first and the frame is wetted afterward, frame rinse water carries oxide particles down over freshly cleaned glass and deposits them in the drying zone. This is the sequence that produces the described streaks. The customer often does not see them until dry - sometimes the next day in direct sunlight.

When frames are cleaned first, any oxide particles released from the frame are removed as part of the frame step. The glass step follows on a substrate that is no longer receiving contamination from above.

Document the sequence you used. If a callback is disputed, the sequence record is part of your defense.

Removing aluminum oxide from glass

Plain squeegee technique does not remove dried aluminum oxide particles. Oxide deposits are micro-abrasive and bond to glass through light mechanical adhesion once dry.

The correct removal approach:

  1. Re-wet the glass surface with a mild solution appropriate for the glass type.
  2. Apply a dedicated metal-oxide stain remover or a non-scratch mild acidic polish (confirmed safe for the glass type). Work in small sections.
  3. Agitate gently with a non-scratch pad. Do not use steel wool or abrasive scrubbers on glass - see the scratch-risk note below.
  4. Squeegee clean and inspect in raking light.

For light oxide transfer that has not bonded heavily, a second pass with the standard cleaning solution and a clean sleeve will sometimes remove it if done before the glass has fully dried. Once dry, a dedicated product is required.

Confirm that the glass is not fabrication-debris-affected before using any abrasive agitation. If fab-debris glass is suspected, limit agitation to a soft cloth and rely on the chemical action of the oxide remover rather than mechanical scrubbing.

Customer communication

The explanation to the customer has two parts: what happened, and what it means going forward.

What happened: "The gray streaks came from the aluminum frame, not from the cleaning itself. Weathered aluminum develops an oxide layer on the surface, and when the frame gets wet during cleaning, those particles wash down onto the glass. It's a sign the frame coating has worn through - the frame itself is the source."

What it means going forward: "We can remove the streaks today and they'll come back after the next rain or cleaning if the frame is not treated. The frame oxidation needs to be addressed - either a frame oxidation treatment, a protective coating applied to the aluminum, or eventually frame replacement if the corrosion is deep."

This converts the callback into useful information for the customer and opens a legitimate upsell conversation.

Upsell: frame oxidation treatment

Once you have confirmed oxidized frames on a property, the relevant upsell is frame restoration or protective coating service.

Frame oxidation treatment involves cleaning the oxidized frame surface with a dedicated aluminum cleaner, removing the loose oxide layer, and applying a protective coating (such as a carnauba-based or polymer sealant appropriate for aluminum) that slows re-oxidation. This service adds meaningful time per window but commands a corresponding premium and reduces repeat callbacks.

On commercial properties with large aluminum curtain walls or storefronts, frame oxidation is a recurring maintenance item. Pricing it as an annual or biannual add-on to the cleaning contract is both accurate and valuable.

On residential properties where the frames are extensively corroded or pitting has begun, the correct recommendation is frame replacement. Document your observation and tell the customer directly.
