Dri-Eaz Evolution vs Revolution LGR - Equipment Decision Reference

Why this matters

LGR (low-grain refrigerant) dehumidifier selection drives drying-time math on every Category 1 and Category 2 loss. Pick the wrong unit and you either over-deploy expensive iron on a 600 sq ft kitchen flood or under-dehumidify a saturated 2,800 sq ft basement and miss IICRC S500's 3-to-5-day drying target. The Dri-Eaz Evolution LGR 7000XLi and the Revolution LGR are the two units most restoration operators actually compare in 2025. Their published AHAM and saturation pints-per-day ratings look close on a spec sheet, but the operating envelope, recovery at low grain depression, and rebuild-cost curve diverge enough that the wrong pick costs you a day on the dry-out and a callback on the moisture-mapping signoff.

AHAM vs saturation ratings - read both

Manufacturers publish two pints-per-day numbers: AHAM (80 F, 60% RH) and saturation (90 F, 90% RH). AHAM is the marketing number; saturation is the boiler-plate worst case. For an LGR what matters in the field is the curve between those two anchors and how flat it stays as grain depression closes. The Evolution LGR 7000XLi is rated 143 pints/day saturation, 74 pints/day AHAM. The Revolution LGR is rated 122 pints/day saturation, 63 pints/day AHAM. The Evolution's bigger compressor and larger coil give it roughly a 17% edge at saturation and a 17% edge at AHAM, but the gap narrows at the low-grain end (below 55 grains/lb) where the Revolution's tighter refrigerant circuit recovers nearly as well.

When the Evolution wins

Pick the Evolution LGR 7000XLi when:

  • Affected area exceeds 1,500 sq ft of Category 2 or any Category 3 loss.
  • Initial GPP (grains per pound) reading in the affected space is above 110 and ambient is above 80 F.
  • You are running a tent-dry or containment strategy that requires aggressive grain depression in a sealed envelope.
  • The job is more than 36 hours post-loss and you need to recover Class 3 saturation (walls, ceilings, contents all wet).
  • The structure has hardwood floors and you are committing to in-place drying with a target subfloor MC below 12% in 4 days.

The Evolution's onboard data logger (DataLink-compatible) also documents the AHAM/saturation curve straight to your job file, which becomes evidence on a denied insurance claim.

When the Revolution wins

Pick the Revolution LGR when:

  • Affected area is 500 to 1,500 sq ft, single-room or small-floor losses.
  • You need stackability and portability - the Revolution is roughly 21 lbs lighter and shorter than the Evolution, which matters on stair-only basements.
  • Power is constrained to a single 15A circuit and you cannot guarantee a dedicated 20A run.
  • The job is Category 1 with response under 12 hours and grain depression is already underway from open-window ventilation.

The Revolution's lower amp draw (5.8A vs 8.4A on the Evolution at nameplate) lets you stack two Revolutions on a single 15A circuit where one Evolution would trip the breaker on compressor startup. On crowded loss sites with shared house panels this is the deciding factor more often than the published pints/day numbers.

Power, deployment, and the 20A reality

Most residential basements have one or two 15A general-purpose circuits. An Evolution at 8.4A draw uses 56% of a 15A circuit's continuous-load capacity (NEC 80% rule = 12A continuous on a 15A breaker), which leaves room for one HEPA air scrubber but not two air movers. A Revolution at 5.8A leaves headroom for two air movers AND a small scrubber on the same circuit. If your power plan requires a generator or a temporary subpanel, the Evolution's higher capacity per unit reduces total iron count and is the right call. If you are working off the homeowner's existing panel, the Revolution gives you flexibility.

Maintenance and rebuild economics

Both units share the Dri-Eaz refrigerant-circuit platform, but the Evolution's larger compressor has a longer mean time between rebuilds in real fleet data - operators report 4,000 to 5,500 run hours on an Evolution before compressor replacement vs 3,500 to 4,500 hours on a Revolution under comparable Cat 2 duty. The Evolution also accepts a wider range of replacement filters (MERV 8 and MERV 11 both fit), which simplifies your parts cage. Coil cleaning interval is the same on both - every 200 run hours or every job in Cat 3, whichever is sooner. Replacement coil and compressor parts are interchangeable across model years 2021 and newer, so a mixed fleet of both units shares a single parts SKU set.

Refrigerant work on either unit requires EPA Section 608 certification (Type II for high-pressure systems). Do not let an uncertified tech open the sealed refrigerant circuit. Recovery, evacuation, and recharge by an uncertified operator is a federal violation under 40 CFR 82, Subpart F.

The decision matrix in one paragraph

If the job is over 1,500 sq ft, Category 2 or 3, on its own dedicated circuit, and you need maximum grain depression in a sealed envelope - deploy the Evolution LGR 7000XLi. If the job is under 1,500 sq ft, Category 1 or low-end Cat 2, or you are stacking multiple units on shared 15A circuits and need portability - deploy the Revolution LGR. For mixed-fleet operators, a 60/40 Evolution-to-Revolution ratio matches the typical residential restoration mix in most markets and gives you the right tool for both the small condo flood and the multi-room basement loss.
