The Temporary Fix Someone Left in Place
Why this matters
Somewhere between the original fault and your arrival, someone often put a band-aid on the problem, a prior tech, a handyman, the customer, a previous owner, and then it got forgotten. The system limps along on that stopgap until it fails again or fails worse. If you do not recognize the band-aid for what it is, you will diagnose the symptom it is producing instead of the fault it is hiding, and your repair ends up built on top of someone else's shortcut. Learning to spot a stopgap is the first move in a whole class of hard diagnoses.
What a stopgap is, and why it's still there
A stopgap is a fix meant to buy time, not to last. It addresses the symptom enough to restore function without correcting the cause. Most were installed with good intentions, to get heat back on a Friday night, to stop a drip until payday, to keep a tenant happy. The problem is not the intent. It is that "temporary" quietly became permanent. Nobody came back. The person who did it may be long gone, and the customer may not even know it is there.
The universal tells
Across every trade, a stopgap looks different from a proper repair:
- Mismatched materials. Tape where a fitting belongs, a wrong-size part made to fit, household hardware on equipment.
- Reversible by hand. A clamp, a wedge, a prop, a jumper, something added on top rather than integrated.
- Odd tidiness, or the opposite. Either one suspiciously new-looking spot on an old system, or one crude, out-of-character bodge on otherwise clean work.
- A defeated or bypassed control. A safety switch jumped out, a valve zip-tied open, a sensor taped over. This one is not just a stopgap, it is a hazard (see the decision tree on jury-rigged repairs).
- Something that does not belong. A bucket, a fan aimed at a component, a hose run somewhere strange, a cord from an unexpected outlet.
A field key of common stopgaps

The point of the table is the second column: a stopgap always points at a fault. Find the band-aid, and you have found the neighborhood of the real problem.
Is it holding, failing, or already dangerous?
Sort what you found:
- Holding. It is doing its job for now and is not a safety issue. You still address the root cause, but you are not in a rush created by the stopgap itself.
- Failing. The band-aid is at the end of its life, the tape is weeping, the clamp is slipping. The clock is real now.
- Dangerous. It defeats a safety function or creates a new hazard, an oversized breaker, a bypassed limit, a bonded part that should float. This jumps the line: make it safe before you diagnose further.
Don't just yank it out
A stopgap is compensating for something. Pull it blindly and you can unleash the original fault at full force, the leak it was holding, the pressure it was capping, the load it was limiting. Understand what it does before you remove it, relieve the energy or pressure it was managing, and be ready to control the fault it exposes. Removing the band-aid is a step in the diagnosis, done deliberately, not a reflex.
Write down what you found
Note the stopgap on the work order: what it was, where, and what it was hiding. This protects you (you did not create it), informs the customer (they may not have known), and gives the next tech a history. A photo before you disturb it is worth more than a sentence.
