The Sound Changed Gradually, Not Suddenly: Decision Tree
Why this matters
Whether a noise appeared instantly or crept in over weeks is one of the highest-value facts in the entire call, because a sudden onset and a gradual onset point at almost completely different fault families. A sudden noise usually means something broke, came loose, or got damaged in a single event. A gradual noise usually means something is wearing, and wear has a progression you can often catch partway through instead of waiting for full failure. This tree uses onset timeline as the primary branch, ahead of the sound's category, because it is frequently more reliable than the customer's description of the sound itself.
Start here: get the timeline, not just the sound
Ask, through whatever channel is available, specifically about the onset: did it start all at once, or has it been getting louder or different over time. If the customer cannot pin an exact moment but is confident it used to be quieter and now is not, that counts as gradual. If they can point to a specific day, event, or job (a power outage, a storm, someone working on the unit, a recent heavy-use period), treat it as sudden even if the noise itself sounds similar to a gradual-wear case.
If the onset was sudden
Something specific happened. Look for an event, not a slow decline.
- If it started right after a power event (an outage, a surge, a brownout): see the companion article on correlating a fault's onset with a recent power event. A motor or control board can be damaged by a single event and produce a new noise immediately after, with no prior gradual warning.
- If it started right after any work was done on the unit (by you, a customer, or a previous contractor): suspect something was left loose, misaligned, or reassembled slightly wrong. Check fasteners, mounts, and couplings that would have been disturbed by that work first.
- If it started right after an impact, a fall, or debris entering the unit: suspect physical damage, a bent part, or foreign material now caught somewhere. Inspect for a bent blade, a dented housing, or an obstruction before assuming a wear-related fault.
- If no event can be identified at all despite a genuinely sudden onset: treat this as unusual and widen your inspection; a part can fail suddenly at the end of a long, invisible wear process (a bearing that finally lets go), so a sudden noise with no obvious trigger does not rule out wear, it just means the wear was not audible until the final stage.
If the onset was gradual
Something is progressing. Your job is to catch it at the earliest stage you can and estimate how far along it is.
- If it is a rising-pitch whine that has slowly gotten higher or louder over weeks: this is the classic bearing-wear progression, faint whine, to audible whine, to rumble, to grind, to seizure. Where you catch it on that progression tells the customer how urgent the replacement is. A faint whine with no rumble yet means real time remains; a rumble means plan for it soon; a grind means treat it as near-term failure.
- If it is a hum or vibration that has grown steadily louder without changing character: suspect accumulating imbalance, such as gradual buildup of debris or dirt on a rotating part, or a mount or isolator slowly hardening and losing its ability to absorb vibration. Both are slow, cumulative processes rather than a single event.
- If it is a rattle that has gone from occasional to constant: suspect a fastener or connection that started slightly loose and has been walked progressively looser by ongoing vibration. See the companion article on vibration loosening a connection over time.
- If the gradual change tracks with a specific season or usage pattern (worse in heavy-use months, worse in extreme temperatures): suspect a component that is marginal and only reveals itself under peak demand, rather than a straightforward linear wear curve. Note the pattern for the customer since it explains why the noise seems to come and go across the year rather than steadily worsening.
Why this distinction changes your urgency framing, not just your suspect list
A sudden-onset fault is usually already at its worst state; the diagnosis is about identifying and fixing what broke, and it will not get gradually worse from here on its own. A gradual-onset fault is mid-progression; part of the job is estimating where on that curve you are, because that estimate is what lets you tell a customer honestly whether this is urgent or can reasonably wait for a scheduled repair.
