The Reset That Masks the Problem: Decision Tree
Why this matters
A reset is the most seductive tool on the truck. Power-cycle the control, clear the fault, and the equipment runs, customer is happy, you are back on the road in ten minutes. The problem is that a reset clears the symptom while leaving the cause untouched, and the fault comes back, often when you are three jobs away and it is harder to reach. A reset that fixes nothing is a callback you scheduled for yourself. This tree is about knowing when a reset is the fix and when it is just hiding the work.
Safety first: never reset past a safety lockout you have not understood
Before anything: if the equipment locked out on a safety (overheat, overpressure, flame failure, overcurrent), a reset that simply re-arms it without finding why is dangerous. The lockout happened to prevent a hazard. Lead with the hazard action, confirm the protected condition is actually safe, and only then reset. Start here: what does the reset actually clear?
Sort what the reset does before you reach for it.
- It clears a one-time, self-resolving condition (a brief power blip, a transient that will not recur, a true momentary glitch): the reset is the fix. Nothing is wrong now.
- It clears a fault whose cause is still present (the worn part, the blockage, the failing component that tripped it): the reset masks the problem. The equipment runs until the cause acts again.
Only the first case is a real fix. The second is a stopgap at best and a deception at worst.
The test: did anything change besides the fault clearing?
Ask what physically changed when you reset.
- You found and corrected a cause, then reset to clear the latched fault: legitimate. The reset is just the final step that re-arms a control after a real repair.
- You reset and nothing else changed, and it ran: you cleared a latched fault on a cause that is still live. The reset masked it.
A reset is the closing step of a repair, not a substitute for one. If the only thing you did was reset, you have not diagnosed anything.
Why equipment latches a fault in the first place
Controls latch, meaning they stay tripped until reset, on purpose. A latch exists so a fault cannot silently come and go, hiding the fact that it happened. Defeating that by routine resetting throws away the one record that the condition occurred.
- A latch on a safety condition is protecting people and equipment.
- A latch after several auto-retries means the control already tried to recover and could not. That is a stronger fault than a single trip.
When a control has latched after retries, it is telling you the condition is persistent, not momentary. Resetting it is the opposite of what the data says.
When a reset is genuinely the fix
- A documented one-time event the equipment cannot self-clear (some controls latch on a single power anomaly by design).
- After a real repair, to clear the latched fault.
- To establish a clean starting point so you can watch what reoccurs, with the customer informed it is a test, not a fix.
In the last case, say so plainly: "I am resetting it to see if it comes back. If it does, here is what we will need to do."
When a reset masks and you must keep digging
- The fault returns after the reset (even minutes or hours later): the cause is still live. Stop resetting and find it.
- The control latched after auto-retries: persistent condition. Diagnose, do not re-arm.
- The customer tells you they have already reset it several times: every prior reset was masking. Treat it as a recurring fault and chase the cause.
A fault that has been reset repeatedly is not a fresh call, it is a known recurring problem that has been hidden. The reset count is your most useful clue.
Tell the customer what a reset did and did not do
If you reset to clear after a repair, say the repair fixed it. If you reset as a test or a stopgap, never let them believe it is solved. The dangerous outcome is a customer who thinks the problem is gone walking away from equipment with a live, unaddressed cause. Document what you reset, why, and whether the cause was found.
