The Helper Did the Step But You Doubt They Did It Right: Decision Tree
Why this matters
The apprentice says it is done. The reading even looks plausible. But something in how fast the answer came, or how the last one went, tells you the step may not have been done the way you meant. This is a different problem than an impossible reading. Here the number could be right and the work still wrong, or the number is right for a step they did not actually perform. Accept it on faith and you build the diagnosis, or the repair, on a foundation you never checked. This tree is how to resolve the doubt without re-doing the whole visit or accusing an honest hand.
Start here: if the doubted step is a safety step, treat it as not done
Some steps cannot ride on "probably."
- If the step you doubt is a safety step - verifying a circuit dead before contact, confirming a valve closed and pressure relieved, a lockout in place - do not proceed on their word. Have them re-perform and prove it with a live reading you hear in real time, or stop and treat the system as still energized, still pressurized, still live. - If the doubted step is not a safety step, work the doubt below before you spend a trip on it.
Step 1: verify by an independent signal, not by asking again
Asking "are you sure you did it?" gets you a louder yes, not a truer one.
- Confirm the step by a consequence that must exist if it was done. If they say they tightened the connection, the reading it should change should have changed. If they say they cleared the drain, water should now flow. Check the effect, not the claim.
- A step done right leaves a fingerprint somewhere downstream. Find the fingerprint before you believe the report.
Step 2: read the tells of a step half-done
- The answer came too fast. A check that takes two minutes reported in ten seconds usually was not run.
- The result is suspiciously clean - exactly the textbook value, or exactly what you predicted out loud. Expectation contaminates a green hand's report more than dishonesty ever does.
- They cannot describe the setup when asked. Someone who took the reading can tell you where the leads were. Someone who guessed cannot.
If any tell fires, do not escalate the argument. Move to a re-do of just the decisive part.
Step 3: have them re-run the one step that matters, out loud
You do not re-do the visit. You re-do the single load-bearing action, narrated live.
- "Walk me through it as you do it this time - tell me each thing as it happens."
- A live narration surfaces a skipped or reversed sub-step in real time, where a report after the fact hides it.
- Ask for a photo of the decisive setup and result. A picture of the meter face and probe placement, the valve position, the cleaned part, settles it faster than three more questions.
Step 4: separate "did it wrong" from "cannot do it"
When the re-run still does not convince you, decide which problem you have.
- If they can do it but rushed or skipped, the fix is slowing down and confirming, one step at a time. Coach the discipline.

Step 5: when you cannot clear the doubt remotely, do not bank the result
An unverifiable step is not a done step.
- Mark the reading as unconfirmed and refuse to let the diagnosis turn on it. Route the decisive check to a visit where your senses, or a trusted hand's, can take it.
- Better an open question than a wrong condemnation ordered off a step you never saw completed.
