The Function-Test Checklist (Generic)

Why this matters

The repair is not done when the part is installed. It is done when the whole system runs the way the customer uses it. A function test is the deliberate end-of-job check that confirms exactly that. Most callbacks are not from a bad repair; they are from a fix that worked on the bench but was never run through a real cycle on site. Five minutes of function testing turns "I think it's fixed" into "I watched it work."

This checklist is trade-agnostic. Whether you serviced a furnace, a pump, a panel, or a door opener, the sequence is the same: power up, run a full cycle, push the limits, and confirm safety.

Step 1: Restore the system fully

Before you test, put everything back the way it lives in service.

  • Re-energize all power you cut. A test on partial power tells you nothing.
  • Reopen every valve, damper, or shutoff you closed.
  • Reconnect anything you disconnected to get access, even unrelated wires or hoses.
  • Replace covers and panels that affect airflow, safety interlocks, or door switches. Many systems will not run with a panel off, and that is by design.

A surprising share of "still broken" calls are a valve left closed or an interlock left open by the tech.

Step 2: Cold start and watch the sequence

Power the system up from off and watch it come to life. You are looking for the correct startup order.

  • Does it start when commanded? Note any delay; some are normal, some signal a problem.
  • Does each stage fire in the right order? (Igniter before gas, prime before run, soft-start before full load.)
  • Listen and feel. A new rattle, a hum, a vibration, or a hot smell is information. You know what normal sounds like; trust it.

If startup is wrong, stop and diagnose. Do not push a system that started badly into a full cycle.

Step 3: Run a full operating cycle

Let it run a complete cycle the way the customer would, start to finish. A system that starts fine can still fail in the middle or fail to shut off.

  • Watch it reach its target (temperature, pressure, level, position).
  • Confirm it holds steady at target without hunting or short-cycling (turning on and off rapidly).
  • Confirm it shuts down cleanly when satisfied, and does not restart immediately.

Take a real measurement here if the trade calls for one: supply-to-return temperature split, output pressure, voltage and current draw, flow rate. A number you can record beats a feeling. It also gives you proof if the customer calls back.

Step 4: Exercise the controls and limits

Run every control the customer touches, and push the system to its setpoints.

  • Cycle the thermostat, switch, timer, or remote the customer uses. All of them, not just the one nearest you.
  • Drive it to its high and low setpoints and confirm it responds.
  • Trip a safety on purpose where it is safe to do so (a float switch, a limit, a door interlock) and confirm the system reacts correctly. A safety you never tested is a safety you are guessing about.

Step 5: Confirm the safeties

This is the step you never skip. A system can heat, pump, or move and still be unsafe.

  • Confirm every safety device is connected and active, not jumpered out or bypassed from your testing.
  • For combustion, confirm proper venting and no spillage. For electrical, confirm grounding and that protective devices are in place. For pressure, confirm relief devices are free.
  • Remove any temporary jumper, clip, or override you added during diagnosis. Leaving one in is how a nuisance trip becomes a hazard.

Step 6: Final walk and document

Close the loop before you leave.

  1. Do a clean-up pass: tools accounted for, covers on, area as you found it.
  2. Show the customer it works. Run one cycle in front of them. This single act prevents most "it is doing it again" calls.
  3. Record what you measured and what you confirmed on the work order. The numbers protect you and inform the next tech.
  4. Note anything you saw that is not failed yet but is heading there. The customer decides, but you flag it.
