The Fault That's Worse in One Orientation (Decision Tree)
Why this matters
A customer tells you the noise only happens going one direction, the leak only shows up when a component is tilted a certain way, or the unit only misbehaves after it was moved or reinstalled at a different angle. Orientation-sensitive faults are one of the most useful clues in the trade because gravity and internal clearances only misbehave in a small number of predictable ways. Missing this clue means you diagnose the fault as random or intermittent when it is actually completely repeatable, just not in the position you happened to test it in.
Start here: reproduce the fault in the orientation the customer describes
Do not trust a verbal description alone; recreate the actual position or motion. Many "random" complaints resolve immediately once you test in the specific orientation instead of the neutral or resting position a bench test defaults to.
- If you can reproduce the fault reliably in one orientation and not others, you have a genuine orientation-dependent fault. Continue below.
- If the fault appears regardless of orientation once you actually test multiple positions, this is not an orientation issue, even if the customer perceived a pattern; move to a standard intermittent-fault diagnosis instead.
Check for a fluid or lubricant level and pooling issue
The single most common cause of an orientation-sensitive fault is a fluid, oil, or lubricant that pools away from where it is needed in certain positions.
- If the fault is worse when the component is tilted so that internal fluid or lubricant would drain away from a bearing, seal, or moving part, suspect low fluid level, a clogged return path, or a design tolerance that assumes a specific installed orientation. Check fluid level and any orientation requirement in the equipment's documentation before assuming a part is failing.
- If the fault appears with excess fluid pooling into a component in certain positions (flooding a chamber that should stay relatively dry), suspect a failed seal, a blocked drain, or overfill.
Check for a mechanical clearance or contact issue
Some faults are purely mechanical: a component that only makes contact, binds, or loses contact in specific positions due to gravity acting on a slightly worn, loose, or misaligned part.
- If the fault correlates with a specific direction of gravity's pull on an internal component (a switch, a float, a loose fastener, a worn bushing), inspect for wear or looseness that would only manifest as a problem once gravity pulls the part into a bad position. A part that is fine when supported by its housing in one orientation can bind or lose contact once gravity works against it in another.
- If the fault is worse under vibration or motion in one direction specifically (during transport, during operation on an incline, during a specific motion cycle), suspect a loose connection or fastener that only separates under that specific combination of gravity and motion.
Check for an electrical connection sensitive to position
Loose or marginal electrical connections can be intermittent by nature, and gravity or flex in a specific orientation is a common trigger.
- If the fault is electrical in nature (intermittent power, erratic reading, a signal that drops) and correlates with orientation or the wiring being under tension or compression in that position, suspect a connector that is not fully seated, a wire under strain at a specific bend, or a solder joint with a hairline crack that only opens under that specific flex.
Confirm against the equipment's intended orientation
Before treating this purely as a defect, check whether the equipment has a documented required orientation for installation or operation. A component installed or used outside its intended orientation can produce exactly this kind of position-dependent fault even when nothing is actually broken; the fix in that case is correcting the installation, not repairing a part.
