The Customer Feels a Problem Your Instruments Don't Show: Decision Tree
Why this matters
The customer swears something is wrong. Your meter says everything is fine. This is the moment that separates a diagnostician from a parts-changer. The wrong move is to trust the instrument over the person and drive off, because sometimes the fault is real and hiding, and sometimes the comfort complaint is a hazard wearing a comfort costume. This tree keeps you from both misses: the missed fault and the missed danger.
Start here: is the complaint actually a hazard cue?
Before any comfort diagnosis, screen the complaint for a safety signal. Some things people describe as discomfort are early warnings, and each one leads with the safety action:
- "A funny smell" near fuel-burning equipment, or headaches and nausea that ease when they leave the house: treat as a possible combustion or carbon monoxide problem. Get people to fresh air, shut the appliance down, test for CO, and do not run this as a comfort call.
- "A draft" or "cold air" at a flue or vented appliance: could be backdrafting or spillage. Confirm proper draft before anything else.
- "A tingle," "a buzz," or a warm outlet or switch: stop and treat it as an electrical fault. De-energize the circuit and verify it is dead before touching it.
- "Warm" or "hot" at a panel, a fixture, or a motor: a heat complaint on electrical is a fault, not a preference.
If any of these fit, you are out of the comfort tree and into the hazard. Handle the hazard first, always.
If it is not a hazard: reproduce it
You cannot fix what you cannot watch happen. Get the customer to make it occur while you are standing there. When does it happen, where, doing what?
- If you can reproduce it: measure at that moment, in that spot. Go to the next section.
- If you cannot reproduce it on demand: it is likely intermittent or time-based. Skip to the intermittent section.
Measure at the point and time of complaint
Move your instrument off the equipment and to the exact place they feel it, at the time they feel it.
- If the reading at the complaint point is out of spec: you have a real fault (distribution, a partial blockage, a weak branch). Diagnose it normally.
- If the reading at the complaint point is in spec: the equipment truly is delivering. Now sort perception from a secondary cause. Check the sensory channel (sound, smell, light, vibration) and the adjacent variables (a window, a wall, another appliance) that can produce the feeling without a fault in your system.
If it is intermittent
In spec now does not mean in spec always. A fault that shows up on a hot afternoon, or only on a long draw, or only on startup, will read perfect on a calm day.
- Leave a min/max or logging capture if you have one, or have the customer note the exact time and conditions next time.
- Correlate with load, weather, time of day, or a specific appliance running, and come back at that time if you have to. An intermittent fault you chase to its trigger is a real fault; do not downgrade it to perception just because it hid from you once.
When the readings hold up under every condition
If you have reproduced the conditions, measured at the complaint point, checked the sensory and adjacent causes, and everything is genuinely in spec, then you are in a true no-measurable-fault case. That is a real finding, not a failure. Hand it to the right resolution: education, an in-spec adjustment, a design-limit conversation, or a preference change.
