The Customer Changed Something and Now It Fails: Decision Tree
Why this matters
The system worked for years, the customer changed something unrelated, and now it faults. The catch is they almost never connect the two, because the change was a new appliance, a remodel, a rearranged room, a habit, or a setting they do not think of as touching your equipment. They called about the fault, not the change. If you diagnose the equipment in isolation you will chase a part that is fine, because the real cause is the interaction between your system and whatever they added. The method is to reconstruct the timeline and test the change as the trigger.
Start here: if the change created a hazard, handle it first
Some customer changes are dangerous the moment they are made. Look for those before anything else.
- A new high-draw appliance on an existing circuit, warm outlets or a tripping breaker: treat it as a real overload. De-energize and check the conductor and connections; do not just reset. The circuit may not be rated for what they added.
- A remodel that boxed in, blocked, or reduced venting on a combustion appliance: treat draft and combustion as a safety issue. Restricted make-up air or a blocked vent can produce carbon monoxide.
- A change that put a load on a gas or water supply beyond its capacity: confirm pressures and relief paths before diagnosing symptoms.
Branch 1: build the timeline
The whole method is dating the fault against the change. Get both dates.
- Ask directly and broadly: what is new or different since it last worked right - appliances, fixtures, furniture, landscaping, a new tenant, a new routine, a setting someone adjusted. Frame it as "anything at all," because they filter out what they think is unrelated.
- Pin the fault's onset as tightly as you can. "It started around when we..." is the sentence you are fishing for.
- If onset and change land in the same window, you have a lead. If the fault clearly predates every change, the change is a red herring and you diagnose normally.
Branch 2: find the interaction, not just the change
A change near the fault in time is a suspect, not a verdict. Show how the two connect physically.
- Added load: a new appliance, fixture, or pump sharing a circuit, a supply, a drain, or a vent can push a marginal system past its limit. Measure the shared resource with the new load running.
- Changed environment: new furniture over a return, a rug over a floor register, a remodel that changed airflow or drainage, landscaping that redirected water. The equipment is fine; its conditions changed.
- Changed setting or habit: a thermostat schedule, a water heater temperature, a new usage pattern that runs the system harder or at a new time. Reproduce their new pattern and watch.
If you cannot draw a physical line from the change to the fault, do not blame it. Keep the change as a lead and diagnose the equipment too.
Branch 3: prove it, then have the honest conversation
Once you can reproduce the fault by exercising the change, you have causation, not correlation.
- Demonstrate it plainly: with the new load off, it holds; with it on, it faults. Seeing it convinces better than telling.
- Frame the fix around the interaction: the system needs to adapt to what they added (a dedicated circuit, a resize, restored airflow or venting), or the change needs adjusting. This is not "you broke it," it is "these two do not get along, here is how to fix it."
- Document the change, the interaction, and the recommendation, so the same call does not come back mislabeled as your repair failing.
