The Awkward or Confined Space Judgment Decision Tree
Why this matters
Crawlspaces, attics, pits, tanks, vaults, ducts, and tight equipment cavities put you in places that are hard to get into and, more importantly, hard to get out of fast. The hazard is rarely the tight fit itself. It is the air you cannot see, the energy you forgot was there, and the fact that if something goes wrong, no one can reach you quickly. This tree leads with the stop-and-test action, because in a confined space the time to find out it is dangerous is before you enter, not after.
Start here: stop and test before you enter
Do not enter a confined or restricted space on the assumption that it is fine. The most dangerous spaces look exactly like the safe ones.
- Recognize a permit-type confined space. It is large enough to enter and work in, it is not designed for continuous occupancy, and it has a limited or awkward way in and out. Tanks, pits, vaults, large ducts, and tight crawl areas often qualify.
- Identify the hazards before entry. Hazardous atmosphere (low oxygen, toxic gas, flammable vapor), engulfment risk, stored or live energy, awkward exit, heat, and anything that could trap or overwhelm you.
- Test the atmosphere where required. Use a calibrated gas monitor to check oxygen level, flammable gas, and toxic gas before entry, and continuously while inside if conditions can change. An atmosphere you cannot smell can still kill you.
- Control the energy and the access. Lock out and de-energize anything that could start, move, fill, or energize while you are inside. Confirm the way out stays clear.
- Have a way out and someone outside. For higher-hazard spaces, that means an attendant outside, a means of communication, and a planned rescue that does not require the rescuer to also enter blindly.
If you cannot test the atmosphere, control the hazards, and arrange a safe exit and a person outside, stop. Do not enter. The space will still be there once it is set up properly.
If the atmosphere is the question
The air is the silent killer in confined spaces.
- If you have not tested and the space could hold gas, vapor, or displaced oxygen: do not enter until it is tested. Many fatal atmospheres give no warning to your senses.
- If the monitor alarms or reads outside safe limits: do not enter, or exit immediately if inside. Ventilate and retest. Do not "hold your breath and grab it."
- If the atmosphere can change while you work (a process could release gas, or your work could generate it): monitor continuously, not just once at the door.
If the hazard is energy or engulfment
- If machinery, augers, mixers, or moving parts share the space: lock them out before entry. A device that starts while you are wedged inside is a trap.
- If the space can fill with liquid, loose material, or be flooded by an upstream valve or line: isolate and lock those sources. Engulfment can happen faster than you can climb out.
- If there is stored pressure or charge: relieve and verify it gone, same as any stored-energy work, before you commit your body to the space.
If the only real issue is the awkward fit
Sometimes the space is just cramped, not atmospherically or energetically dangerous. It still deserves judgment.
- If you would be wedged in a position you could not quickly back out of: plan the exit first. Do not commit your body where a cramp, a slip, or a panic leaves you stuck.
- If the work requires force, heat, or tools in a position with no room to react: bring a second person and stage the task so you are never trapped mid-task.
- If heat or exertion in the tight space could exhaust or overheat you: limit time inside and have someone monitoring.

The judgment that keeps you alive
A confined space punishes optimism. The technician who "just pops in for a second" is the one the rescue is for. Test the air, kill the energy, keep the exit clear, and never enter a higher-hazard space without someone outside who can summon help. If you cannot meet those conditions, the entry waits. No reading, no part, and no schedule is worth being the person who could not get out.
