Teaching Yourself What School Didn't
Why this matters
Trade school and the first months on the job teach you enough to be useful, not enough to be good. The gap between a useful tech and a sought-after one gets closed on your own time, by deliberate self-teaching. Nobody is going to hand you that curriculum. The techs who build it for themselves are the ones who pull away from the pack within a few years.
What school actually leaves out
Formal training is built around what can be tested in a classroom. The things that make money in the field are mostly not in there:
- Real diagnosis, where the symptom lies and the obvious cause is a decoy.
- The customer conversation: explaining a problem so a homeowner trusts you and says yes.
- Speed without sloppiness: doing it right and doing it in the time the job was sold for.
- The weird old equipment that no current textbook covers.
- Reading prints, manuals, and wiring diagrams fast under pressure.
None of these are mysteries. They are learnable. They just require you to go get them.
Build a learning loop, not a pile of facts
Random YouTube binging feels like learning and mostly is not. A loop sticks because it connects to real work:
- Hit a wall on a job. You did not know something today. Note it before you forget.
- Run it down that night. Manual, service bulletin, a senior tech, a reputable forum, the manufacturer's documentation.
- Write the answer in your own words. One or two lines. The act of rewriting is what fixes it in memory.
- Use it on the next call that touches the same thing.
A small running notebook (paper or your phone) of "things that stumped me and what they turned out to be" becomes the most valuable reference you own, because every entry is something you personally hit.
Mine the people around you
The best source is not online. It is the gray-haired tech at your own shop and the supply-house counter.
- Ask the specific question, not the broad one. "Why does this unit short-cycle on a hot day?" gets a real answer. "How do I get better?" gets a shrug.
- Watch hands, not just listen. When a senior tech does something fast, ask them to slow down and narrate it once.
- The parts counter knows things. The people behind the supply-house counter see every failure in your area. Ask what is failing a lot lately and why.
- Trade the favor. Older techs share more with someone who carries the heavy stuff and shows up on time. Be useful and the knowledge flows.
Read the documents nobody reads
Manufacturers publish installation manuals, service bulletins, and troubleshooting flowcharts for almost everything. Most techs never open them. That is your edge.
- Read the install manual for equipment before you service it. It tells you how it was meant to work, which is the baseline for spotting what is wrong.
- Track down service bulletins for recurring failures; manufacturers document known defects and the fix.
- Keep the wiring diagram in front of you instead of from memory. Memory is where avoidable callbacks come from.
This is free, authoritative, and specific to exactly what is in front of you. It beats a general video every time.
Practice the parts you avoid
Everyone has a weak area they quietly route around: the electrical side, the controls, the math, the customer talk. The weak area is exactly where the most growth is sitting, because you have been avoiding it.
Pick one weak area per quarter. Take the jobs that lean on it instead of trading them away. It will be uncomfortable and slower for a while. That discomfort is the price of no longer having a weak area.
The business side counts too
If you ever want to lead, manage, or own, start teaching yourself the parts of the trade that are not technical, while you are still a tech:
- How a job gets priced and where the money actually goes.
- What a callback truly costs the shop, beyond the redo labor.
- Basic scheduling logic and why density matters.
You do not need a degree for any of this. You need curiosity and the willingness to ask your manager how the numbers work. Most will gladly explain it to a tech who shows interest, because that tech is showing them a future lead.
Stay current on purpose
Equipment changes. Codes change. What you learned five years ago is partly stale now. Set a low, steady habit: one manual, one bulletin, or one good explainer a week. Steady beats binge. A tech who reads a little every week for a decade ends up knowing more than the one who crammed for a test once.
