Swap Confirmed the Fault, Now What: Decision Tree

Why this matters

A borrowed-part swap that confirms the fault feels like the finish line, but it is really the start of the next decision. You now know the part was the cause, or at least a cause, but that single fact does not tell you whether to simply order a replacement, dig into why that part failed, or worry that the same failure is waiting in other units. Treat the confirmed swap as the end of the diagnosis and you risk a repeat failure, a missed root cause, or an unnecessary part replacement that does not actually fix the customer's problem.

Start here: restore the donor unit first

Do not let the excitement of a confirmed diagnosis leave a customer's previously-working equipment sitting disassembled or untested.

If the fault cleared completely and stayed cleared

If the suspect unit ran correctly with the borrowed part installed, through a real test of the original complaint condition, and the fault did not return, you have a confirmed cause.

  1. Order or source a permanent replacement part, matching the exact specification confirmed compatible during the swap.
  2. Ask why the original part failed, not just that it did. A part that failed from simple wear or age is a straightforward replacement. A part that failed prematurely, or that failed in a way that suggests an external cause (overload, contamination, a companion component that stressed it), needs that cause addressed too, or the replacement fails the same way on the same timeline.

  4. Install the permanent replacement and verify under the same real conditions that originally produced the complaint, not just a quick power-up check, before closing out the call.

If the fault cleared but partially, or came back later

If the borrowed part improved the symptom but did not fully resolve it, or the fault returned after a period of correct operation, the swap has told you the part was a contributing cause, not necessarily the only one.

  1. Do not order a replacement and call it solved yet. Widen the search: a second failing component, a marginal connection elsewhere in the system, or an environmental factor could be compounding with the part you just tested.
  2. Consider whether the borrowed part itself is also marginal. A known-working unit's part is presumed good because that unit is not exhibiting the fault, but "not currently exhibiting the fault" is not the same guarantee as "confirmed perfect," especially if the donor unit is early in its own failure timeline.
  3. Re-run the test for a longer period or under a wider range of conditions if practical, to see whether the improvement holds or degrades further.

If the fault did not clear at all with the borrowed part

If the suspect unit still showed the fault with a known-good part installed, the part is very likely not the cause. Treat this as a confirmed negative, not an inconclusive result, provided the swap itself was done correctly (exact compatibility, proper installation, real-condition test).

  1. Redirect your search to the installation or another component. The part is cleared; move on rather than second-guessing a clean negative result.
  2. Reinstall the suspect unit's original part (assuming it tested fine on the bench and the swap is what actually ruled it out) rather than leaving a borrowed part in place or replacing a component that was just proven not to be the cause.
  3. Revisit the diagnostic path with the part now excluded: check wiring, connections, control logic, or environmental factors specific to this unit's installation that the donor unit does not share.

If you cannot tell whether it cleared, because the fault is intermittent

If the original complaint was intermittent and has not recurred yet with the borrowed part installed, but also had not necessarily been guaranteed to recur in the test window even if the part were still faulty, you do not have a confirmed result either way.

  1. Extend the observation period where practical, rather than declaring success prematurely on an intermittent fault.
  2. Ask the customer to report back after a defined window (a specific number of days or a specific condition, like the next time a particular load or weather event occurs) rather than leaving it open-ended.
  3. Do not restore the suspect unit's original part and close the ticket until you have a real answer, or you risk reintroducing the actual cause without knowing it.

Decision recap

  1. Restore the donor unit and confirm it still works before anything else.
  2. Full, sustained clearance with a borrowed part means order a permanent replacement and investigate why the original part failed.
  3. Partial or temporary clearance means the search is not over; look for a compounding cause.
  4. No clearance at all means the part is ruled out; redirect the search and put the original part back.
  5. An intermittent fault needs a defined observation window before you call the swap conclusive either way.
