Did the Part Fix It, or Did Swapping It Fix It
Why this matters
You pull a part, put a new one in, power it up, and the fault is gone. That looks like a clean, confirmed result. Here is the trap: the fault can clear for a reason that has nothing to do with the part you swapped. The act of disconnecting and reconnecting can reseat a loose plug, break through a thin layer of corrosion at a contact, or simply re-mate a connection that was marginal but never actually failed. If that is what happened, you just credited a working part with a fix that was really performed by your hands during the swap, not by the new component. Close the job with the wrong thing on the invoice as "the fix," and the actual cause, a degraded connection, is still sitting there, waiting to go marginal again.
The mechanism behind the trap
Every substitution test involves physical disturbance, not just a component change. To swap a part you almost always have to disconnect something, and that disconnection is itself an intervention:
- Reseating a connector that was making poor contact reflows the mating surfaces back into full contact, at least temporarily, regardless of which part is on either end of it.
- Breaking through light corrosion or oxidation at a contact point happens just from the mechanical act of unplugging and replugging, which can restore a good connection without anyone intending to clean anything.
- Relieving mechanical strain on a marginal joint (a wire that was under slight tension at a bad angle, a terminal that was not fully seated) can happen as a side effect of the access required to reach the part, independent of the part itself.
None of this requires the swapped part to have been the actual problem. The fault can clear because you touched the connection, not because you changed the component.
The two tests that tell true positive from placebo
You cannot tell the difference by whether the fault cleared. You have to run one more step after it clears, specifically designed to separate the part from the disturbance.
Test 1: does the fault stay cleared after you deliberately re-disturb the connection without changing the part again. Once the new part is in and the fault has cleared, go back and unplug and replug that same connection once more, without swapping anything. If the fault reappears and then clears again on its own or needs another reseat, the connection itself is the unstable element, not the part. If the connection tolerates being disturbed again with no change in the result, that is stronger evidence the part itself, not the disturbance, is doing the work.
Test 2: would reseating the original part alone have also cleared it. Before you fully commit to the new part as the confirmed cause, ask whether you actually tested this. If you still have access to the original part, or a moment before you moved on, reseat the original part in the same connection, disturbed the same way, and see if the fault clears with the old part back in. If it does, the swap was never the fix, the disturbance was, and the original part was fine all along. This is the single most direct way to rule out a placebo result, and it costs you almost nothing to check before you write up the ticket.
Why this matters more on some connections than others
Not every substitution test carries equal risk of this trap. Pay closer attention when:
- The connection point has any visible corrosion, discoloration, or a loose-feeling fit, even mild, since these are exactly the conditions where reseating alone can fix something.
- The part sits in a harness or socket that requires real force to seat, where the physical act of installing the new part inherently applies more pressure or movement to the connection than a light touch would.
- The system has a history of intermittent faults at this same location, since an intermittent fault by definition can clear on its own for reasons unrelated to whatever you just did, making a placebo result easy to mistake for a real fix.
Connections that are clean, tight, and freshly installed carry much less of this risk, because there is little for the act of disturbance to fix even if you wanted it to.
What a confirmed true positive actually requires
Put the two tests together and you get a result you can stand behind:
- The fault cleared when you installed the new part.
- The fault did not return when you deliberately disturbed that same connection again without changing the part further.
- You can say, with reasonable confidence, that reseating the original part in the same way would not have produced the same clearance, either because you actually tried it and it did not clear, or because the original part showed a specific, confirmed failure (a bad reading, a visible defect) independent of the connection.
Skip any one of these and you have a result that looks like a confirmed substitution test but is really an unconfirmed placebo result wearing a confirmed result's paperwork.
Why misreading this costs you later
A placebo result that gets written up as "replaced part X, fault resolved" closes the ticket cleanly and looks like a textbook diagnosis. The actual cause, a marginal connection, is still there, now hidden behind a part that gets credited as the fix. When the connection goes marginal again, possibly months later, possibly on a different visit or a different tech, nobody connects it back to this repair, because the record says the fault was a bad part that got replaced. The comeback gets diagnosed from scratch, the connection issue never gets addressed directly, and the pattern repeats until someone happens to notice the actual connection point independent of any part swap.

- A fault clearing after a swap does not by itself tell you whether the part or the disturbance fixed it.
- Re-disturb the same connection after the swap, without changing the part again, to check whether the connection itself is the unstable element.
- Where you can, reseat the original part the same way to see if it also clears the fault.
- Watch closer on corroded, tight-fit, or historically intermittent connections, where a placebo result is most likely.
- Do not write up "replaced part" as the confirmed cause unless you have actually ruled out the connection itself.
