Seasonal First-Startup Failure Decision Tree
Why this matters
Equipment that sits idle through an off-season and then fails the first time it is called on is one of the most predictable service calls there is. The failure mode is not random - idleness itself causes a specific family of faults. Knowing what idle time does to a system lets you diagnose these calls in minutes instead of hunting blind, and it lets you sell the off-season checkup that prevents the rush call entirely.
Start here: idle is the cause, not a coincidence
When the complaint is "we turned it on for the season and nothing," the off-season is your context. Sitting unused does predictable damage: things settle, dry out, corrode, seize, get colonized by pests, and lose stored charge or pressure. Work the idle-failure list before you suspect a part that "wore out," because a system that sat does not wear, it deteriorates differently.
Confirm the timing first: did it work when it was shut down last season, and is this the very first run since? If yes, you are squarely in seasonal-startup territory.
Step 1: did stored energy or pressure leak away
Many systems hold something while idle that must still be there at startup.
- If a charge, pressure, or fluid level is now low or gone, a slow leak that was invisible during use drained over months of sitting. Check levels and pressures against spec first. A system can lose over a long idle what it would never lose in a week of running.
- If a stored electrical charge dissipated, a component that needs it to start may now be dead or weak even though it is not truly failed.
Step 2: did something seize, stick, or settle
Idle parts stop moving, and stopped parts stick.
- If a moving part will not move, it may have seized from corrosion, dried lubricant, or settling. A bearing, a valve, a damper, a piston, a motor shaft. Try to free it before condemning it - many seized parts recover once broken loose and re-lubricated.
- If a seal dried out, it may have shrunk or cracked while idle and now leaks or fails to hold. Seals that were fine under constant wetting can dry and fail over a dry off-season.
- If sediment or residue settled, it may now block a passage or foul a contact that was clear when last run.
Step 3: did contamination or intrusion get in
An idle system is an open invitation.
- If pests got in, nests, droppings, or chewed connections are extremely common in equipment that sits. Inspect for intrusion before assuming an electrical fault - the "bad wire" is often a chewed one.
- If moisture got in, condensation over months causes corrosion on contacts and connections that were clean at shutdown. Check terminals and grounds for corrosion.
- If debris accumulated, leaves, dust, and dirt collected over the off-season can block airflow, drainage, or movement.
Step 4: was it shut down improperly last season
- If the off-season shutdown skipped a step (not drained, not protected, not covered, left in the wrong state), the damage was set in motion months ago and is only now visible.
- If a protective measure failed (a cover blew off, a heater that prevents freezing was off), the system took off-season damage it was supposed to be shielded from.
Step 5: only then, a true component failure
If levels are good, nothing seized, no intrusion, and shutdown was proper, then treat it as an ordinary fault and diagnose against baseline. But this is the last branch, not the first, because the idle-specific causes above account for the large majority of seasonal no-starts.
Turn the callback into a checkup
The real win is preventing the rush call. A pre-season startup check - levels, free movement, clean contacts, no intrusion, proper protection - catches every fault on this tree before the customer is left without service on the first hot or cold day. Offer it as routine; it is cheaper for the customer than an emergency call and steadier work for you.
