Sealant vs Tape vs Gasket: Which Seal to Use

Why this matters

Picking the wrong sealing method is one of the quietest causes of a callback. Tape on a joint that needed a gasket, sealant on a connection that the manufacturer says to leave dry, or tape wrapped the wrong direction so it shreds and bunches: any of these weeps the day you pressurize, or worse, a week later. The materials cost pennies. The repeat trip does not. This is a decision article: match the seal to the joint.

The three families

  • Pipe-thread sealant (paste / dope): a paste applied to tapered threads. It fills the spiral leak path, lubricates so the joint pulls up tight, and stays workable. It is forgiving and works across many fluids. The right paste must be rated for the fluid (water, fuel, gas, oxygen service all differ).
  • Thread-seal tape: a thin film tape wrapped onto tapered threads to fill the same spiral path. Lighter and cleaner than paste, but easy to apply wrong: wrapped the wrong way it unravels, wrapped too thick it can split a fitting or hold threads apart, and a stray tail can shed into the line.
  • Gasket / O-ring: a separate compressible element that seals on a flat face or in a groove, not on the threads. This is the only correct seal for straight (parallel) threads, flanges, and any joint designed with a sealing surface. The threads just provide clamping force.

When to pick which

  • Reach for paste when you want forgiveness and lubrication, on larger or stubborn tapered threads, or where you may need to back off and re-snug. Paste also suits joints you will service again.
  • Reach for tape when you want a clean, low-mess seal on smaller tapered threads and you will apply it correctly: in the direction the fitting turns, two to three wraps, threads still visible at the crests. Tape is not a fix for damaged threads.
  • Reach for a gasket or O-ring any time the joint has a flat sealing face or a straight thread. Do not try to substitute tape or paste on a face seal; it will not hold pressure reliably.
  • Reach for nothing (dry) on compression and flare fittings and anywhere the manufacturer says dry. Adding sealant there is a mistake that can cause leaks or contamination.

Common mistakes

  • Tape on a straight thread. It will leak. Straight threads need a face seal.
  • Sealant on a compression ferrule. It keeps the ferrule from biting and sealing.
  • Wrapping tape the wrong direction so it peels off as the fitting threads in.
  • Too much tape, which holds threads apart, splits brittle fittings, or sheds debris into the line.
  • Reusing a flattened gasket or a nicked O-ring. Sealing elements are usually one-time; inspect and replace.
  • Wrong fluid rating. A paste fine for water may be attacked by fuel or unsafe for oxygen service.

Quick field check

Before sealing, ask three questions: Is this thread tapered or straight? Does the joint have a flat sealing face or O-ring groove? Does the manufacturer say dry? The answers point to exactly one of the three families. When in doubt, the joint's geometry tells you - a sealing face or groove means a gasket, a tapered thread means paste or tape.
