Refrigerator failure = food spoilage + emergency customer call. The appliance tech who can diagnose + repair common refrigerator issues delivers fast service + customer satisfaction. This is the field card.
Refrigerator types
Top-mount freezer: most affordable; basic design.
Bottom-mount freezer: convenient fresh-food access.
Side-by-side (SxS): vertical split; fridge + freezer.
French door (top + bottom mount): most modern + popular.
Counter-depth: aligned with cabinet; aesthetic.
Built-in (Sub-Zero, Thermador): cabinet-integrated; premium.
Compact / dorm: small; portable.
Outdoor refrigerator: weather-rated.
Wine cooler: specialized; temperature + humidity control.
Compressor types
Reciprocating (legacy): pistons; loud; common older.
Rotary: smoother; quieter; modern.
Variable-speed (inverter): continuous modulation; ultra-quiet + efficient; premium.
Linear (LG): variable speed; specific to LG.
Common refrigerator issues
Not cooling:

Diagnostic procedure
Step 1 - Visual + listening:
- Compressor humming? (yes = power; no = power issue)
- Fan running?
- Light works?
Step 2 - Temperature check:
- Use thermometer; not built-in setting display
- Freezer: 0°F target
- Fridge: 37 - 40°F target
Step 3 - Coil inspection:
- Pull fridge from wall
- Check condenser coils (back OR bottom); dust = poor cooling
- Vacuum + brush; major impact on operation
Step 4 - Compressor + components test:
- Voltage at compressor (verify electrical supply)
- Capacitor test (if applicable)
- Compressor windings (resistance test)
Step 5 - Refrigerant pressure (certified tech only):
- Schrader port access (modern models)
- Low side pressure vs P/T chart
- Charge level check
Common refrigerator parts
Compressor: refrigerant pump.
Condenser coil: heat rejection; back OR bottom of fridge.
Evaporator coil: cold; in freezer section.
Condenser fan: cooling for condenser; back of unit.
Evaporator fan: circulates cold air through freezer + fridge.
Defrost heater: melts frost on evaporator.
Defrost timer OR adaptive defrost board: schedules defrost.
Defrost thermostat: prevents overheating during defrost.
Thermostat (cold control): temperature setting + cycling.
Damper: airflow control between freezer + fridge sections.
Door switch: turns off light + fan when door opens.
Water inlet valve: feeds ice maker + dispenser.
Water filter: in fridge section OR external.
Ice maker assembly: tray, sweep, mold heater, water valve, control board.
Refrigerant systems
R-134a: older refrigerators (pre-2020 production).
R-600a (isobutane): modern; mildly flammable A3.
R-290 (propane): some commercial; flammable.
Service requires EPA 608 Type I certification for small appliances.
Door seals + gaskets
Magnetic seals: magnet pulls seal to metal frame.
Heated seals (some models): prevents condensation.
Common failure: torn, dried out, loose; replace gasket.
Test: dollar bill in door + close; pull; should have resistance.
Defrost system
Defrost cycle: every 8 - 12 hours; heater warms evaporator + melts frost.
Drain hole: at bottom of evaporator; water flows to drain pan under fridge.
Drain pan: water evaporates into room.
Adaptive defrost (newer): adjusts cycle based on door openings + frost buildup.
Ice maker service
Components: water inlet valve, water line, ice mold, mold heater, sweep arm, motor + gear, thermostat.
Common failures:
- Inlet valve clogged OR failed (replace)
- Water line frozen (locate + thaw OR reroute)
- Mold heater failed (replace; no ice production)
- Sweep arm jammed (debris; clear)
- Module electrical (replace)
Manual cycle: small access port to trigger; useful for testing.
Common service tasks
Coil cleaning: pull unit + vacuum condenser annually.
Water filter replacement: every 6 months (filter integrated).
Door seal replacement: when failing.
Ice maker repair: water valve + motor replacement.
Defrost element replacement: when frost builds up.
Thermostat replacement: when erratic OR not maintaining temp.
Compressor replacement (rare DIY; usually whole-unit replace at age).
When to replace vs repair
Repair:
- Fridge < 5 yr old: repair almost always
- Single failure (door seal, ice maker, thermostat): repair
- Newer high-end unit: repair worth investment
Replace:
- Fridge 10+ yr + major repair (compressor): replace
- Multiple failures simultaneously: replace
- R-134a unit failing (refrigerant cost increasing): consider replace
- Energy efficiency upgrade: ENERGY STAR uses 30 - 40% less
Customer education
Temperature settings: 37 - 40°F fridge; 0°F freezer; verify with thermometer.
Cooling vent: don't block; air must circulate.
Door open time: minimize; energy efficient + food safety.
Loading: fridge 75% full ideal (less = no thermal mass; more = air circulation poor).
Water filter replace: 6-month schedule.
Condenser cleaning: annually (homeowner + pro service).
Door seals: visible inspection annually.
Energy considerations
ENERGY STAR: 30 - 40% less energy vs federal min.
Newer = more efficient: typically.
Defrost cycle is power-intensive: minimize door openings; full fridge buffers temp swings.
Old fridge = electricity hog: 1,500 - 2,500 kWh/yr; new ENERGY STAR ~ 500 kWh/yr.

Multimeter, capacitance meter, thermometer (immersion + IR), refrigerator water filters (universal + common OEM), door seal (common sizes), water inlet valves, ice maker module, defrost element, evaporator fan motor (common), basic wrench + driver set, dust brush + small vacuum.
EPA 608 certification
Required for refrigerant work on small appliances (Type I).
Without certification: can't legally service refrigeration components.
