Reading the Evidence of a Previous Repair Attempt

Why this matters

Open up a unit and find mismatched hardware, a wire spliced with electrical tape instead of a proper connector, or a part that clearly is not original, and you have just been handed a head start most techs walk past. Someone was here before you, and what they did, and did not do, tells you what they thought the problem was, what they tried, and where they probably went wrong. Read that evidence before you form your own diagnosis and you often cut a long troubleshooting session down to minutes.

The first read: what does the workmanship tell you about who did it

Prior work generally falls into a few recognizable bands, and each one changes how much you trust what you find.

  • Factory or professional-grade original work: consistent hardware, proper strain relief, clean routing, correct fastener types. If this is what you are looking at and nothing has been disturbed, the original build is probably not your fault source.
  • Competent prior repair: a replaced part that matches spec, proper connectors, reasonable routing, even if the brand or exact part differs from original. This tells you a previous tech diagnosed something real and fixed it correctly; look elsewhere for your fault, and consider whether that old fix is still holding.
  • Rushed or corner-cut repair: tape instead of a proper splice, a fastener substituted with the wrong type or size, a part clearly undersized or oversized for the application, sealant used where a mechanical fix was called for. This is a strong candidate for your current fault, especially if the fault is near that repair.
  • DIY or non-trade work: mismatched hardware, reversed connections, parts installed backwards, safety devices bypassed or removed. Treat any safety device you find disabled as a hazard to address immediately, not just a diagnostic clue.

Read the location, not just the workmanship

Where prior work sits relative to your current fault matters as much as how well it was done.

  • Prior work directly at or immediately adjacent to the current fault location is your strongest lead. Start there.
  • Prior work elsewhere on the same system, unrelated to the current symptom, is background information, not your first lead, but worth noting because it tells you this equipment has a service history and possibly other soft spots.
  • No visible prior work at all, on equipment old enough that you would expect some, can itself be a clue: either the unit has been unusually reliable, or maintenance has been skipped, which raises your suspicion for wear-related and neglect-related causes.

Distinguish an incomplete fix from a wrong fix

Both look similar at first glance, an old fault that is somehow still present, but they lead to different next steps.

  • Incomplete fix: the previous tech correctly identified and properly repaired one real cause, but a second, separate cause was present and never addressed. You will typically find one good repair and one untouched fault. Fix the second cause and you are likely done.
  • Wrong fix: the previous tech treated a symptom instead of a cause, or misdiagnosed entirely. You will typically find a part replaced that did not need replacing, while the actual failure point looks untouched and often shows the same wear or damage pattern that caused the original complaint. Here you need to diagnose from scratch, informed by knowing what has already been ruled out.

What to do with what you find

  1. Photograph prior work before you disturb it, the same discipline you would use for corrosion or leak evidence. If the customer or a warranty question comes up later, you want a record of what was there when you arrived.
  2. If the prior work is rushed or unsafe, say so plainly and fix it to proper standard, regardless of whether it turns out to be your root cause. A taped splice or a bypassed safety device does not get left in place because it is not today's complaint.
  3. If the prior work looks correct and unrelated to your current fault, do not undo it or second-guess it out loud to the customer. Move on and look elsewhere.
  4. Note what has already been ruled out. If a previous tech's records or the physical evidence show a specific part was already tested or replaced, you do not need to re-walk that exact path; use that as a starting constraint on your own diagnosis, while still verifying rather than assuming it holds.
