Reading a System That Two Trades Both Touched
Why this matters
Some of the hardest faults sit exactly where two trades' work meets, and the trap is that each trade did its part correctly. The electrician's feed is fine. The equipment it feeds is fine. The fault only exists at the interface between them, and it usually appeared after the newer work went in next to the older. Whoever was there last gets blamed, fairly or not, and the customer wants a single throat to choke. Reading the seam instead of the two systems is what lets you attribute the fault honestly and coordinate a fix, rather than condemning good work or starting a trade war you cannot win.
Find the seam first
Before you diagnose, locate the boundary. Two trades meet at a handoff: the electrical supply to a mechanical unit, the plumbing stub to an appliance, the gas line to equipment, the control wiring between two systems, a penetration one trade cut through another's assembly. The fault in this family lives at that handoff, not in the middle of either trade's scope. Put your attention on the interface and what crosses it, because that is where an emergent conflict shows.
Each is correct alone, the conflict is emergent
This is the defining read and the reason it is so easy to get wrong. Test the older system by itself and it meets spec. Test the newer work by itself and it meets spec too. The fault is not in either; it is in the relationship the newer work created with the older one. A newer high-demand load on an older supply that was adequate for the original demand. A newer control sharing a path with an older one. A newer penetration that compromised an older assembly's function. Nobody installed anything defective. The combination is what fails, which means the attribution is about the interface, not about a bad tradesperson.
Whose spec governs the interface
Every handoff has a governing requirement, and the fault is usually a violated one: a minimum supply the equipment needs, a clearance, a separation between systems, a support or seal at a penetration. Ask which trade's specification governs the interface and whether the newer work respected it. Safety first: at any gas, electrical, or combustion-air seam, stop and confirm the interface is safe, adequate supply, proper bonding, intact venting, before you troubleshoot performance, because a violated safety spec at a trade boundary is a hazard, not just a comfort fault. Once you know whose spec rules the seam and whether it was met, attribution follows the evidence.

Attribute without starting a trade war
The customer wants a name; give them a boundary and a reading instead. Show the interface spec, the measurement at the seam, and which side crossed the line, in neutral terms: the added load is real and correct, the supply it landed on was sized for the original load, and the interface between them is where the numbers stop working. That is defensible, and it does not require calling anyone incompetent. Personalities are not evidence; the reading at the seam is.
Coordinate the fix at the interface
The correction usually lives on one side of the boundary even though the symptom lives at the seam: enlarge the supply, separate the paths, restore the penetration's seal or support, meet the minimum the newer equipment needs. Be clear with the customer about which trade owns which piece, and document the interface condition you found so the fix targets the boundary rather than tearing into two systems that were each fine on their own.
