Personal Pace vs Rushing
Why this matters
Speed and rushing are not the same thing, and confusing them costs you money. A fast tech moves with a steady rhythm and wastes no motion. A rushing tech skips steps, makes errors, and pays for it in callbacks, rework, and the occasional injury. The callback is the most expensive job you can run, because you do it twice for one ticket and lose the customer's trust on top. Learning the difference between your real pace and panicked speed is one of the highest-value skills in the trades.
The core distinction
Pace is the sustainable speed at which you do the job correctly with no wasted movement. It is fast because it is efficient, not because it is hurried. Rushing is moving faster than your competence at the current task allows, by cutting corners: skipping the test, not torquing to spec, leaving the mess, guessing instead of measuring. Pace makes the day faster overall. Rushing makes the individual job feel faster and the week slower, because the rushed job comes back.
The tell: after a paced job you are confident it is right. After a rushed job there is a small voice saying "I hope that holds." Listen to that voice. It is usually correct.
Where rushing actually costs you
Rushing does not save the time it appears to save. It moves the time to a worse place:
- Callbacks. The skipped test or the half-done fix fails, and you return on your own dime. One callback erases the time saved on several rushed jobs.
- Rework on the spot. The corner you cut breaks something you now have to fix anyway, often taking longer than doing it right would have.
- Safety incidents. Most cut corners involve safety steps: the lockout skipped, the protection not worn, the ladder not set right. An injury ends the day and sometimes the week.
- Reputation. Sloppy, hurried work is visible to customers. The rushed job that "worked" still loses you the next call because the customer saw the mess and the carelessness.
The non-negotiable steps that never get rushed
Some steps are off-limits to speed pressure no matter how far behind you are. These are the steps where rushing converts directly into a callback or an injury:
- Diagnosis. Confirm the actual fault before you fix. A guessed repair is a future return.
- Testing the fix. Verify the repair holds before you pack up. The test is the cheapest insurance you have.
- Safety procedures. De-energize, depressurize, protect, secure. These exist because someone got hurt skipping them.
- The final check and cleanup. A clean, verified handoff is the difference between a finished job and one that comes back.
Build a habit: these steps run at full quality every time, even on the day you are running late. Everything else can flex; these cannot.
How to find and protect your real pace
Your true pace is the speed at which quality stays constant. Find it by paying attention to where errors creep in. If you start making mistakes above a certain tempo, that tempo is your ceiling; back off just under it and you will finish faster overall because you stop redoing work.
Protect your pace against the things that push you to rush:
- A blown schedule. When you are behind, the answer is not to cut quality on the next job, it is to call the office and reschedule the stop you cannot do right. Communicate, do not compress.
- An impatient customer. Acknowledge the pressure, hold your standard, and explain that doing it right is what protects them. A calm, steady tech reads as competent; a flustered, fast one reads as careless.
- Your own adrenaline. Late in a hard day, deliberately slow the non-negotiable steps. That is exactly when they get skipped.
Speed comes from skill and systems, not from hurry
The genuinely fast techs are fast because they have done the job a thousand times, their truck is organized, their checklist is dialed, and they waste no motion. That speed is earned and sustainable. It does not come from skipping steps; it comes from never having to backtrack. Invest in the systems (prep, organization, repetition) and your pace rises on its own, without the costs that rushing brings.
