It Smells Only When Running Decision Tree

Why this matters

A smell that only shows up when a system runs is a real diagnostic gift, because the running condition is the trigger and that narrows the cause fast. But some of these smells are warnings you do not get to take lightly: a burning-electrical odor or a gas/combustion smell can mean a safety problem, not a nuisance. Knowing which smell you have, and what running condition produces it, separates "clean a coil" from "shut it down now." This tree covers HVAC, appliances, electrical equipment, pumps, and pool gear. Start by naming the smell; the smell points to the family.

Start here: name the smell first

Different smells come from different failures. Get the description, then branch.

  • Burning, hot-electrical, fishy, acrid: treat as a potential safety/electrical issue. Branch here first.
  • Gas, rotten-egg, sulfur, or exhaust/combustion: potential combustion or gas issue. Highest priority.
  • Musty, moldy, earthy, "dirty sock": biological/moisture in the airflow. Common and usually not dangerous.
  • Hot dust, scorched, "first heat of the season": often burn-off, frequently benign but verify.
  • Chemical, sweet, oily, or solvent: a fluid or material issue (coolant, lubricant, refrigerant trace, plastic).

Naming the smell is the whole first move. A vague "bad smell" needs to be pinned down before you can branch.

If it smells electrical or burning

This branch gets caution, not curiosity.

1. Is it sharp, acrid, fishy, or clearly burning? If yes, lean toward de-energizing and inspecting before running it more. Overheated insulation and a cooking connection smell before they fail visibly (see Reading Scorch and Heat Marks).

2. Does the smell rise with load or run time? A connection or motor that smells worse the longer it runs, or under heavier load, is heating up. That points to a loose/high-resistance connection, an overloaded or failing motor, or a struggling component.

3. Look for the forensics with the power safely off: scorch, melted insulation, a burnt smell concentrated at one terminal or one component, a swollen part on a board. Find the hot spot.

4. Do not "run it to see" repeatedly. If it smells like burning electrical, more runtime is more risk. Make it safe, then diagnose. This is the one branch where reproducing the symptom over and over is the wrong move.

If it smells like gas or combustion

This is the top of the priority list and may not be your "diagnose at leisure" situation.

1. A gas or rotten-egg smell is a stop-and-make-safe condition, not a troubleshooting puzzle to poke at. Follow your trade's gas-safety procedure: ventilate, eliminate ignition sources, shut off as appropriate, and confirm there is no hazard to occupants before continuing.

2. An exhaust or combustion smell while a fuel-burning appliance runs can mean a venting or combustion problem (spillage, a blocked or breached flue, poor combustion). This carries a carbon-monoxide risk. Treat it as a safety inspection, not a comfort complaint.

3. Only after it is confirmed safe do you move to finding the specific cause (combustion air, venting, burner condition, a leak source).

If it smells musty or moldy

Now you are in routine territory.

1. Does it smell only when the air handler or fan runs? A musty smell that appears with airflow is biological growth in the air path: a wet coil, a dirty drain pan, standing condensate, contaminated filter or duct (see The Dust Pattern That Shows Airflow).

2. Does it hit on startup then fade? The "dirty sock" pattern, strong at start and easing as it runs, is classic microbial growth on a coil that gets disturbed when air first moves across it.

3. Find the moisture. Biological smell needs moisture; locate the wet spot (pan, coil, drain, duct) and address both the growth and the water that feeds it. Clean alone without fixing the moisture means it returns.

If it smells like hot dust or scorched (burn-off)

1. Is this the first heat or first run of the season? A hot-dust smell on first heating, fading within a cycle or two, is usually dust burning off heating surfaces. Benign, verify and move on.

2. Does it fade and not return? Burn-off goes away. If the scorched smell persists past the first cycles or gets worse, stop treating it as burn-off and move to the electrical/burning branch, something is overheating.

Two rules tie it together. First, the running condition is the clue, what is on, how hard, how long, when it appears, narrows the cause every time. Second, let the smell set your posture: most smells are diagnose-at-leisure, but burning-electrical and gas/combustion are make-safe-first. When in doubt on those two, safety beats curiosity.
