Is It Getting Worse, the Same, or Better? Reading the Trend
Why this matters
A single reading is a snapshot. A trend is a story, and the story is usually more useful than the snapshot for deciding what to do next. Two faults can look identical on today's visit and demand completely different responses, because one has been stable for a year and the other has doubled in severity over the last month. Learn to ask "compared to what" and "compared to when" before you decide how urgent something is, and you will stop treating a slow-moving nuisance and a fast-moving failure as if they deserve the same response.
The three trend shapes and what each one means
- Getting worse: the symptom, the reading, or the frequency has measurably increased since the last known point. This is the shape that changes your priority. Something is actively progressing, and the rate of progression tells you roughly how much runway is left before it becomes a failure, a safety issue, or a much bigger repair.
- Staying the same: the condition is present and stable, not improving, not worsening, across a meaningful stretch of time. Stable does not mean acceptable, but it does mean you likely are not on a clock. This is the category where "monitor and revisit" is often the honest, correct recommendation rather than an excuse to defer real work.
- Getting better: the symptom is trending down on its own, or in response to something that already changed. This deserves real scrutiny before you relax: is the improvement coming from an actual fix, from a natural cycle (weather, seasonal use, load), or is it the deceptive early stage of a fault that gets briefly better before it gets much worse (a common failure signature is intermittent improvement followed by total failure).
How to actually establish the trend, not just guess at it
- Ask for history, not just today's number. "Has this reading, sound, or symptom always been like this, or has it changed" is the single most useful trend question you can ask a customer, and most techs skip it in favor of jumping straight to today's test.
- Check for any record of prior readings, a previous service report, a maintenance log, a photo the customer took earlier, anything that gives you an actual comparison point rather than a memory.
- If no record exists, establish a baseline today and say so plainly: "I don't have a prior reading to compare this to, so what I'm recording today becomes the baseline for next time." This is honest, useful, and sets up whoever services this next, possibly you, to actually answer the trend question later.
- Weight a customer's felt sense of the trend even without hard numbers. "It used to only do this once a week, now it's every day" is real trend data, even though it is not a logged measurement. Take it seriously and factor it into urgency.
Reading rate of change, not just direction
Two faults both trending worse are not equally urgent if one is worsening slowly and the other is worsening fast.
- Slow, gradual worsening over months usually still allows for a planned repair on a reasonable timeline, though it should be scheduled, not simply noted and forgotten.
- Rapid worsening over days or weeks deserves elevated urgency and a shorter timeline recommendation, because the same rate of change projected forward reaches failure much sooner.
- A sudden jump after a long stable period is its own signal, something changed recently (a new load, an environmental change, a component finally reaching end of life after years of stable wear) and is worth asking about directly rather than assuming it is a continuation of the old baseline.
Turning the trend into a recommendation
State the trend and the timeline implication together when you talk to the customer, not just the current reading in isolation. "This is currently within range, but it's moved noticeably worse since your last service, and at this rate I'd expect it to become a real problem within the next season" gives the customer an actual decision to make. A bare "it's fine for now" throws away everything the trend just told you.
