Why this matters

What drones DON'T replace

Drone footage SUPPLEMENTS the hands-on inspection where safe; doesn't replace it.

FAA regulations + Part 107

Commercial drone operation REQUIRES Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate:

  • 16+ years old
  • English language proficiency
  • Pass FAA Knowledge Test ("Part 107 test") at FAA-approved testing center
  • Recurrent training every 24 months (online + free since 2021)

Drone registration:

  • Registration number must be marked on the drone
  • Remote ID broadcast required for most flights since 2024

Operational requirements (Part 107):

  • Visual line-of-sight (operator must see the drone with unaided vision; spotter can extend this)
  • Daylight or civil twilight flight (night flight requires waiver OR specific waivers)
  • Below 400 ft AGL (above ground level) - exceptions for inspection within 400 ft of structure
  • Not over people unrelated to operation (without waiver)
  • Not from moving vehicle
  • 100 mph max speed
  • Class B/C/D/E airspace requires authorization (LAANC for most cases - instant approval; some require manual)
  • Cannot interfere with manned aircraft (mandatory yield)

Hobbyist / recreational:

  • Different rules (Section 44809) - TRUST test online, no Part 107
  • COMMERCIAL use (paid work, even if minor) requires Part 107

If you fly for ANY business purpose, you need Part 107.

Operational workflow (roof inspection example)

Pre-flight (10 - 15 minutes)

  1. Customer briefing + permission
  2. Site assessment: airspace, obstacles (trees, power lines, antennas)
  3. LAANC check if near airspace
  4. Battery + memory card check
  5. Calibration

Flight (15 - 30 minutes for typical residence)

  1. Take-off in safe area; minimum 30-ft clearance
  2. Initial wide perspective shots
  3. Roof plane-by-plane systematic coverage
  4. Detail shots of any noted damage
  5. Gutter line inspection
  6. Chimney + flashing detail
  7. Return to launch + landing

Post-flight (10 - 30 minutes)

  1. Download photos / video

Customer + privacy considerations

  • Permission from customer to fly over their property (explicit, in writing)
  • Adjacent property awareness - drone over neighbor without consent + neighbor complaint
  • Don't fly over schools, prisons, government facilities, stadiums
  • Don't fly when public events ongoing (TFR - Temporary Flight Restrictions)
  • Privacy: avoid filming non-relevant areas

Insurance

  • General liability coverage may EXCLUDE aviation operations - verify
  • Required for most commercial work + many customer contracts

Billing + monetizing

  • Bundled with quote: drone footage included in roof / gutter / chimney inspection

Common mistakes

  • Operating without Part 107 certificate
  • Flying in Class B/C/D airspace without LAANC authorization
  • Flying over crowds at outdoor events
  • Recording incidental privacy violations
  • Battery exhaustion mid-flight (loss-of-drone risk)
  • Wind exceeding manufacturer limits (loss-of-control)

The single highest-conversion sales move with a drone is showing the customer the roof footage AT THE SAME TIME you walk through their quote. Customer asks "why does my roof need replacement?" - instead of telling, FLY THE DRONE. Customer SEES the missing shingles, the curled tabs, the flashing damage. Closing rate on quotes presented with drone footage runs 50 - 80% vs 25 - 40% on ladder-only inspections. The drone pays for itself in 10 - 20 roof closes.
